Two perennial powers went head to head to the bitter end when St. John’s of Minnesota, who had won two NAIA and two NCAA D3 titles met Wisconsin-Whitewater, inner of 6 D3 titles. Whitewater pulled the game out with a field goal with 2:10 left and an interception on the Johnnie’s subsequent possession. The progression o the score in this game went like this: 0-7, 3-7, 5-7, 8-7, 8-14, 15-14, 15-21, 22-21, 22-24, 25-24, 32-24, 32-32, 35-32.

North Central continued to roll through the playoffs, having defeated Wabash by 36 points, the division’s colossus , Mount Union by 7 in overtime, Delaware Valley by 17 and now undefeated, 4th ranked Muhlenberg by 31. They cruised to a 38-7 halftime lead and coasted to a 45-14 win, looking very much like a possible national champion, which they have never been before.

Quarterfinals:
James Madison is the only team other than North Dakota State to win the FCS title since 2011 and are after another title. Both JMU and NDS had a hard time in the quarterfinals, misfiring on offense but retaining control of the contest on the defensive end. The Dukes shut Northern Iowa down and out, 17-0.
Montana State rolled to a 24-3 lead before giving up a late score to Austin Peay State but won easily, 24-10.
Their state-mates, the University of Montana, was not as a successful, losing to Weber State by the margin of a blocked punt-TD, 17-10.

North Dakota State did not look like their normal dominant selves in holding on against fellow Missouri Valley school Illinois State, 9-3. That association might explain the difficulties the Bison has: the schools that play you every year know the most about what you do and how to beat you and have the best chance of doing so if they have the right personnel and the redbirds have one of the county’s best defenses.
