Week 5

NAIA

Morningside, (Iowa), won their second straight championship, winning a 40-38 shoot-out over two time former champions Marian (Indiana). It was the Mustang’s 29th win in a row.

NCAA Division 3

North Central won their first ever NCAA Division 3 title, rolling over six time champion Wisconsin-Whitewater 41-14. D3 used to be about having different champions almost every year as those scores you peruse in the Sunday paper came alive and you could actually see these teams you knew only by name play. Then first Mount Union and the Whitewater took control of the division, such that those two schools played for the title for seven years in a row and nine times in ten years, (2005-2014). It was a great rivalry but it made this event much less interesting. Since then things have slowly opened up again as Mary Hardin-Baylor won their first titles in 2016 and 2018 and now North Central has won their first title.

NCAA Division 2

West Florida’s amazing Argos completed their Cinderella Story by winning their first national championship over Minnesota State (Mankato), 48-40.
Freshman QB Austin Reed shatters records as West Florida wins Division II national title
UWF started their program in 2016, made the D2 final in 2017 and now two years later they were champs. Will West Florida someday join Central Florida and South Florida on the major college level?

NCAA FCS

Semi-Finals:

North Dakota State, winner of 7 of the last 8 national championships, will try for 8 of 9 against the one team that beaten them, James Madison, (who looks just as good as they did then.)

The Bison had looked strangely impotent in downing Illinois State 9-3 in the quarterfinals but they looked more like what we are used to in demolishing Montana State 42-14. They used big plays- three 70+ yard plays, (it looked kind of like our experience with Boston College), to blow out to a 29-7 halftime lead and never looked back.

The Dukes did something similar against Weber State, taking a 24-7 halftime lead and coasting to a 30-14 win.
