CLASS AA
The Elmira Express of Section 4 ran into the state’ #1 ranked team, Aquinas Institute of Secition 5 and a snowstorm as well and got de-railed, 6-19. Both teams struggled to run their normal offenses in the snow. Frosty and the Aquinas defense held the Express to 148 yards rushing and 34 points less than their scoring average. Per stargazette.com, Luch Pietropaolo ran for 99 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries… “It was a brutal game,” Aquinas head coach Chris Battaglia said. “Both teams played so hard. They were a well-coached, physical team with a lot of tough kids. It was a great game. It was a war of attrition tonight.” Aquinas had won the Class A title five times, the last in 2010. They’ve never won the AA title.
They will face Monroe Woodbury of Section 9, who won the 2005 State Title and then finished second the next three years. The beat White Plains of Section 34-13, also in the snow. Per Lohud.com, “Kevin Carr, a senior, rushed for 193 yards and three scores and threw for another 90 yards. Junior Cole Gennett added another 117 yards and two touchdowns.”
The match-up:
Section 9- Monroe-Woodbury 12-0 (479-167) NYSSWA #5 Max Preps 3/242 12-8, 2 titles vs.
Section 5- Aquinas Institute 12-0 (394-109) NYSSWA #1 Max Preps 1/125 19-5, 5 titles
Comment: Can Aquinas do it in Class AA? Both teams can score. I’ll go with the better defensive team.
CLASS A
Section 6’s Williamsville-North handled Union-Endicott of Section 4, 27-14. Per pressconnects.com, “Williamsville North quarterback Ryan Majewski passed for 206 yards and three touchdowns… Majewski had touchdown passes of 9, 36, and 52 yards, the 52-yard score to Kolbe Hughes putting Williamsville North (9-3) ahead 27-0 with 9:03 remaining in the third quarter….“We put a couple of wrinkles in (offensively), and he came up big time,” Williamsville North coach Mike Mammoliti said of Majewski. “He’s a senior quarterback and three-year starter, and he played just like that. That’s what you expect out of your senior, I couldn’t be any prouder.”
They will face #1 ranked Queensbury of Section 2, which won a thriller over Secition 9’s Cornwall, 36-27. It was a great rushing attack, (the Spartans ran for 419 yards), vs. a great passing attack, (Cornwall passed for 294 yards but could muster 32 yards on the ground). Great running usually beats great passing. Cornwall’s star quarterback, Mike White, went down with a dislocated elbow but his understudy, Jason Bailey pulled the Dragons to within 27-28 with 3:15 left. A try for a two point conversion was batted down. Trying to run out the clock, the Spartans got an insurance score on a 46 yard run by Kody Bruno with 1:46 left and clinched it with a two point conversion of their own.
The match-up:
Section 2- Queensbury 12-0 (458-151) NYSSWA #1 Max Preps 13/1169 6-2, 0 titles vs.
Section 6 Williamsville North 10-3 (307-141) NYSSWA #4 Max Preps 19/1325 2-0, 0 titles
Comment: Another great running team vs. great passing team combo and the State’ #1 team vs. a team that wasn’t supposed to be here. I’m always hesitant to pick against a team that wasn’t supposed to make it this far because the reasons given sound like the reasons they shouldn’t have beaten the other teams, either. But then you’re also wondering when the coach will turn into a pumpkin. I’ll just go with Queensbury ], just became they just seem to be the better team.
CLASS B
In the old west, for fun, they used to take two old locomotives, put them on the opposite ends of a run of track and get them all steamed up and going full bore. The engineers would then jump off and a large crowd they’d sold tickets to would watch and see what happens:
http://www.unmuseum.org/crash.htm
Something similar is about to happen in the Class B championship at the Carrier Dome. Section 4’s Maine Endwell won the State Class A championship two years ago, beating Aquinas in the semi and rallying form a 7-20 deficit to beat Burnt Hills 27-20 in the final. That team finished 14-0 and out-scored its opposition by a modest 415-131, (30-9). The next year they had 21 of 22 starters back and dropped down to Class B due to enrollment. They took no prisoners in rolling to another state championship, this time out-scoring 13 opponents by a total of 669-125, (51-10), including 141-40 in the three playoff games, (47-13). Max Preps ranked them #1 in the state ahead of all the Class A and AA schools and #3 among all the small schools in the entire country. They have been nearly as good this season, outscoring 12 opponents 559-135, (47-11). They barely scraped by Section 3’s Cazenovia, 35-34 on a controversial ending where the Lakers thought they had scored a two point conversion but the refs ruled that their quarterback’s knee had touched before the ball got to the goal line, (the one clip I was able to find seems to support the refs). But these Spartans, (there are a lot of them in NYS football), were missing 6 suspended players in that game. They were back for the semi-final against Section 6’s DePew and the Spartans rolled, 35-13, behind 337 yards rushing for their 37th win in a row. Per pressconnects.com, “Darnell Woolfolk rushed for 187 yards and two touchdowns, Colin LaSalle added 95 yards and two more scores, and M-E’s defense fairly well owned the line of scrimmage against the Section 6 champions from Erie County.”
Coming at them from the other direction is Section 2’s Schalmont, which shell-shocked Marlboro of Seciton 9, 66-0 after beating Beekmantown of Section 7 60-6 the week before. They have now outscored 12 opponents 555-37. That’s an average of 46- 3. But the biggest stat is the halftime score vs. Marlboro, a team that came in as the state’s #2 ranked Class B team, (Schalmont was #3). It was 60-0! At halftime! Per Daily Freeman Sports, “A Schalmont player overheard on the sideline summed it up best during a wild first half. “This is like Madden, only better.” Schalmont is averaging 43.5 points per game in the playoffs- in the second quarter. They got 47 vs. Beekmantown and 40 more vs. Marlboro. They didn’t actually gain a lot of yards: 326-121 but they set up their opening score with a 56 yard kickoff return, then returned two interceptions for touchdowns and blocked a punt for another. The entire first half was played between the Marlboro 45 yard line and their goal line. Nick Gallo scored
three second quarter touchdowns but only gained 69 yards. “Tonight Schalmont was the better team. My hat’s off to them,” Marlboro coach Rich Ward said. “They are a team to be reckoned with.”
Section 2 Schalmont 12-0 (555-37) NYSSWA #2 Max Preps 11/715 6-3, 0 titles vs.
Section 4 Maine-Endwell 12-0 (559-135) NYSSWA #1 Max Preps 7/521 12-2, 3 titles
Comment: You wonder if Schalmont is doing it with mirrors, Maine-Endwell rushed for more yard in scoring 35 points on DePew than Schalmont gained in scoring 66 on Marlboro. Their 47 point second quarter vs. Beekmantown was aided by 5 turnovers. Maine-Endwell has still scored more points this year than Schalmont. If the Spartans can withstand the early storm and hold onto the ball, I think they will survive this collision. Picture Hagler-Hearns where Tommy hit Marvin with everything but the kitchen sink and he was still standing there. But do watch out for the flying metal.
CLASS C
Hoosick Falls, another prolific Section 2 team that broke Hornell’s 51 game winning streak to win last year’s Class C state title, was looking to repeat when they came a cropper against Rye Neck of Section 1, shut them down and out, 14-0. The Panthers gave up their initial first period score of the season on a 55 yard fumble return. Rye Neck forced a short punt and then marched 46 yards in eleven plays to make it 14-0 and that ended the scoring. Per The Record: “That was one of the most important things; hitting them early,” said Rye Neck senior Pedro Cueto, who finished with 125 rushing yards. What we always say is hit them hard early and then don’t ever back down.”... “We were able to move the ball, but we would move it, and then we’d have some sort of physical mistakes and it would put us behind the sticks,” Hoosick Falls coach Ron Jones said. “That was a very good defensive team and when you’re behind the sticks with them, you’ve got some issues.”
Chenango Forks of Section 4, who from 2001-2007 played for the state title 5 times and won it twice, blanked Section 6’s Cleveland Hill 22-0 to return to the final. Isaiah Zimmer ran for 130 yard and two touchdowns. This was still another game in the snow and the Eagles didn’t respond well, gaining only 55 yards and no points.
The match-up:
Section 1 Rye Neck 11-0 418-69) NYSSWA #3 Max Preps 16/1300 2-0, 0 titles vs.
Section 4 Chenango Forks 11-1 (485-131) NYSSWA #2 Max Preps 17/1308 19-9, 2 titles
(NYSSWA ranks teams from sections 7 and 11 and they rank Section 11’s Babylon #1)
Comments: This shapes up as a duel between two strong defensive teams, although they both can score and will be playing in the Dome. Rye Neck is not the same high school as Rye High School which the Blue Devils beat for the state title in 2003-04 and then lost to in 2005 and 2007. This Rye Neck is kind of a newbie, which doesn’t mean they won’t win but history says Forks is the team to beat.
CLASS D
Section 7’s Moriah, after upsetting Cambridge of Section 2, hit the wall in losing to Chester of Section 9, 55-14. Chester quarterback Vinnie Aloi threw 7 touchdown passes in the romp, tying a state record. Chester is normally known as a strong running team. Aloi had thrown 13 TD passes all season.
They will take on defending state champions Randolph of Section 6, who for the second year in a row beat Tioga of Section 4 in the semis. Last year it was by only 7-6 and Randolph wound up 11-2 (378-147). This year it was 35-6 and Randolph is 12-0 (509-90), so the Cardinals, who have won 22 in a row, are a load. Chris Doubek rushed for 203 yards and 2 TDs for the winners.
Section 9- Chester 10-1 (508-112) NYSSWA #2 Max Preps 88/1391 3-7, 0 titles vs.
Section 6- Randolph 12-0 (509-90) NYSSWA #1 Max Preps 6/494 10-2, 3 titles
Comment: the teams have similar point differentials but Randolph is a three time state champ, (they also won it in 2005 and 2009) so they have to be the favorite here. Max Preps ranks them the 6th best team in the state- even though they are a Class D team! They would favor the Cardinals over any team in the Dome this year except the two Class A teams.
The Elmira Express of Section 4 ran into the state’ #1 ranked team, Aquinas Institute of Secition 5 and a snowstorm as well and got de-railed, 6-19.
