THE STATE PLAYOFFS
The state playoffs began in 1993. The Classes were A, B, C and D. Class AA was created in 1996.

There are 11 sections in New York State:
Section 1: Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland, Westchester counties .
Section 2: Capital District
Section 3: Central New York
Section 4: Southern Tier
Section 5: Genesee Valley
Section 6: Western NY
Section 7: Champlain Area
Section 8: Nassau
Section 9: Orange, Sullivan, Ulster counties
Section 10: St. Lawrence Area
Section 11: Suffolk
Sections 8 & 11 do not participate in the NYS playoffs. Sections 7 and 10 have so few schools that they have no schools in certain categories and have preliminary elimination games to get their schools into the playoffs. In some years in some categories, the entry is just listed as “7-10”, implying that the sections were considered together and the best school from either was issued an invitation.

Here are the won-loss records of each section in each classification in state playoff games, with the number of titles in parenthesis.
SECTION 1 Total: 142-68(24) Class D: 26-15(4) Class C: 38-11(8) Class B: 38-12(7) Class A: 25-16(4) Class AA:15-14(2)
SECTION 2 Total: 99-86(6) D:21-18(1) C:19-18(1) B: 19-18(1) A: 27-17(2) AA: 13-15(1)

Comments: The best high school football in New York State, (north of New York City), has historically been played in Sections 1 ,2 and 5, (the Hudson River area and the Rochester Area) but Section 6, (the Buffalo area), had quite a power play in the last two years with 8 titles in 2008-9). Central New York was breaking even until last year‘s disaster. Section 3 is now 76-80 and has 10 titles, (there have been 97 awarded in nineteen sections so 10-11 would be average.) The North Country just doesn’t have enough population to compete with the other sections and neither does Section 9, (basically the Adirondacks and the Catskills). The State Playoffs are set up on an East-West basis so Section 3 teams play Section 4 teams, against who they are fairly well-matched and then play the winner of Section 5 vs. Section 6, which is tougher. Sections 1 & 2 get Section 7, 9 or 10 in the first round which is kind of a walk-over. Then they typically face each other in the semis. The teams in the “West” would seem to have a harder road than the teams in the “East”. One wonders if, should sections 8&11 stop “playing with themselves”, there might be a “North-South” look to the playoffs and Section 3 might do better.

It’s interesting to see how some sections do in each class. Assuming that success rate is directly related to the number of schools in each class, Section 4, (the Southern Tier) has little to offer at the level of the smallest and the biggest schools but is pretty competitive in between. Section 3 for some reason, is the opposite, the best in the state in Class D and better than you’d think in AA but mediocre in C and less than that in A-B. Section 7, (Lake Champlain) is pretty good in Class B but lousy elsewhere, indicating that most of their schools are at that level. Sections 5 and 6, (basically Western New York), are pretty good down the line.

Here is a list of the most successful teams in the state, ranked by victories in the state tournament, regardless of class, (many of them have played in more than one class). They are list in order of victories. If that’s a tie, the first tie-breaker is state titles and the second the number of losses.
1) Caldonia-Mumford (Section 5) 18-4 (4 state titles)
2) Dobbs Ferry (1) 19-3 (4)
3) Rochester Aquinas (5) 17-4 (5)
4) Rye (1) 16-4 (2)
5) Chenango Forks (4) 16-8 (2)
6) Cambridge (2) 14-10 (1)
7) Peru (7) 14-13 (1)
8) Tuckahoe (1) 13-7 (2)
9) Harrison (1) 12-5 (2)
10) New Rochelle (1) 12-7 (1)
11) Hornell (5) 11-2 (3)
12) Webster Schroeder (5) 11-3 (3)
(Webster High School split into Webster Schroeder and Webster Thomas in 2002. “Webster” had won the 2001 AA title and when Webster Schroeder win the 2002 AA title all references I could find were to their winning their “second straight state title”, so I added Webster Schroeder’s record to that of “Webster” and gave Webster Thomas their own record. Webster Thomas is 3-2 with no title so the overall “Webster” record would be 14-5 (3) if you added them all together.)
13) Lackawanna (6) 11-5 (3)
14) Amsterdam (2), Troy (2) and Walton (4) 11-5 (2)
17) Jamestown (6) 10-1 (3)
18) Edgemont (1) 10-2 (3)
19) Onondaga (3) 10-3 (3)
20) Nyack (1) 10-4 (2)

The New York State Sportswriter’s Association has had rankings since 1969. Originally they ranked all schools together. In 1970 they were divided, (as they should be) between “large” schools and “small” schools. In 1988 they went to Class A, B and “C-D”. Here are the teams, (with section numbers) that won in the polls for the years prior to the start of the state tournament in 1993:

The following teams have won state titles, (I am including poll champions from 1969-92- if a poll champion was from section 8 or 11, I treated the highest rated team from sections 1-7 and 9-10 as the “poll champion“- if there had been a tournament in those years, they‘d have been in it and winning the poll was the equivalent of winning the tournament in those days):

Section Three always starts out by playing Section 4 in the first round We are 13-3 against them in Class AA, 10-9 in Class A, 9-10 in Class B, (thank you, Chenango Forks, who beat our teams seven times in a row), 8-10 in Class C and 10-8 in Class D, (Section coaches in Classes C and D voted not to send a team to the state playoffs in the first year, 1993). Over all Section 3 is 50-40 vs. Section 4. But we are only

If they survive Section 4, the Section 3 champs play the winner of the Section 5 and 6, (basically the Rochester and Buffalo areas) first round game. We’ve done well in Class D, 6-4 (3-2 vs. each), and held our own, 4-4, (3-3 vs. Section 5, 1-1 vs. Section 6), in Class C but been dominated in Class B, 2-7, (1-5 vs. Section 6, 1-2 vs. Section 5), Class A, 2-8, (2-5 vs. Section 5, 0-3 vs. Section 6) and Class AA, 4-9, (3-7 vs. Section 5, 1-2 vs. Section 6). Overall vs. Section 5 they are 12-18 vs. Section 5 and 6-13 vs. Section 6.

The following Section III teams have cleared the quarterfinal hurdle vs. Section 4 and survived the semifinal carnage vs. Sections 5 and 6 to play for the state championship:
1993 Class B Chittenango lost to Section 1 Yorktown 13-23
1996 Class A Whitesboro lost to Section 2 Troy 13-27
1997 Class C CBA lost to Section1 Dover 26-32 (2OT)
1997 Class D West Canada beat Section 1 Bronxville 22-14
2000 Class A Fulton lost to Section 1 Nyack 20-34
2000 Class D Dolgeville beat Section 2 Fort Edward 55-3
2001 Class D Onondaga beat Section 1 Dobbs Ferry 35-7
2002 Class C Onondaga beat Section 1 Briarcliffe 35-6
2002 Class D Dolgeville lost to Section 1 Dobbs Ferry 35-38
2003 Class D Onondaga beat Section 2 Cambridge 41-21
2004 Class AA CBA beat Section 1 New Rochelle 41-35
2004 Class D Weedsport beat Section 1 Tuckahoe 22-11
2006 Class AA Auburn beat Section 9 Monroe-Woodbury 27-26 (1OT)
2007 Class AA West Genesee beat Section 9 Monroe-Woodbury 42-21
2007 Class C Bishop Ludden beat Section 1 Dobbs Ferry 21-16
2008 Class B Oneida lost to section 1 Rye 12-16
2010 Class C General Brown lost to Section 1 Bronxville 14-34
Section 3 is 10-7 in state championship games. They lost their first three, then had an incredible 10-2 streak before losing the last two. They are 6-5 vs. Section 1, 2-1 vs. Section 2 and 2-0 vs. Section 9. So if we can survive the semi-finals our chances of winning a state title are pretty good.

This year’s field:

CLASS AA
Section 3 CBA 10-0 (330-125) NYSSWA ranking, (within the division) #3 Max Preps State ranking (overall) #13 Max Preps national ranking #1081. 9-7 record in state playoffs. Won 2004 AA tournament championship.
Section 4 Binghamton 8-2 (417-134) Honorable Mention (HM), MP 12/1041, 2-4, Large school poll championship 1985
Section 5 Rochester Aquinas 7-3 (227-167) #12, MP 7/702, 17-4, A-1998, 2001, 2002, 2007, 2010
Section 6 Orchard Park 9-1 (391-194) #8, MP 17/1202, 7-8, AA-2008, 2011
Section 1 New Rochelle 8-1 (165-34) #7 MP 10/933, 12-7, AA- 2003
Section 9 Pine Bush 9-1 (350-85) #17, MP 5/567, 0-1

Section 2 Shaker 10-0 (342-123) #1, MP 9/7848, 0-0 BYE
Comments: CBA looks to be a better team than Binghamton but so did West Genesee last year and they lost after bolting to an early 21-0 lead. And Max Preps thinks the Patriots are a bit better than the Brothers. Aquinas is one of the great programs in the state but their first year in AA has been a bumpy ride. Orchard Park is the defending state champs. But again, Max Preps likes Aquinas better, (they tend to play more out-of state teams). New Rochelle doesn’t have a Ray Rice to fuel their offense but they have a great defense. Pine Bush has put up big numbers and Max Preps likes that but they don’t have much of a history in this event and neither does Section 9, except for Monroe-Woodbury. Shaker has no history at all in the event but they are ranked #1 in the state by NYSSWA. They and CBA are the only unbeaten teams in this classification, which therefore seems to be wide open.

CLASS A
Section 3 Nottingham 8-2 (280-169) #12, MP 23//1537, 0-0
Section 4 Union Endicott 8-1 (320-136) #8, MP 8/756, 1-8 Polls: Large 1979, Class A 1989
Section 5 East Ridge 10-0 (381-150) #4, MP 15/1154, 0-1
Section 6 Sweet Home 10-0 (371-110) #2 MP 31/1894, 6-4, AA- 2008, 2009
Section 1 Somers 10-0 (345-124) #11, MP 26/1618, 0-1
Section 9 Cornwall 10-0 (447-98) #6, MP 37/2056, 4-7
Section 2 Burnt Hills 9-1 (455-100) #5, MP 14/1131, 7-3
Section 10 Potsdam 9-1 (405-146) #26, MP 175/6159, 0-2
Comment: There’s alack of prior state champions in this field. Sweet Home won back to back titles in 2008-2009, during Section 6’s big power play. Burnt Hills has been knocking on the door in recent years, finishing second three times in the last four years. U-E has won a couple of titles decades back and are the highest rated team by Max Preps. The three bottom teams, Cornwall, Burnt Hills and Potsdam have run up some impressive victory margins but none of them has ever won a state title. Nottingham avenged one of their defeats in beating J-D and their other loss was to AA’s champion, CBA, so their 8-2 recovered probably under-rates them. But this is one of two divisions Section III has ever won, (the next one is the other). Note: Lawrence High School of Long Island is the #1 ranked team in the state in this classification. Long Island has it’s own playoffs.

CLASS B
Section 3 Cazenovia 9-1 (381-111) #5, MP 20/1266, 1-5
Section 4 Maine-Endwell 10-0 (528-95) #1, 1/302, 7-2, A- 2004, 2011
Section 5 East Rochester Gananda 8-1 (351-139) #6, MP 38/2061, 0-0, Poll- 1978 Large
Section 6 Alden 10-0 (366-132) #2, MP 21/1433, 0-2
Section 1 Our Lady of Lourdes 9-0 (303-93) #3, MP 41/2259, 0-0
Section 9 Marlboro 10-0 (306-94) #4, MP 73/3441, 0-1
Section 2 Glens Falls 9-1 (310-160) #8, MP 42/2271, 1-1
Section 7 Peru 9-1 (414-74) #7, MP 50/2750, 6-11, B- 2001
Comment: Again, there not a lot of history here with 5 of the eight teams never having won a state title. But the big story is the season Maine-Endwell had. They won the Class A title last year, returned 21 of 22 starters and dropped down to Class B due to a drop in overall enrollment in the school. Class B never had a chance. The Spartans, who beat what appeared to be a dominant ESM team last year 21-7, crushed ten opponents by an average of 43 points per game. No one came within three touchdowns of them all year. Max preps has them rated the #1 team in New York State, even over all the Class AA and Class A teams. They rank them #301 nationally, 266 spots better than any other New York team. They would have be favored to win the Class AA or A titles, much less Class B. So much for enrollment determining how good your football team is. All does not end well when you have to play Maine-Endwell.

CLASS C
Section 3 Skaneateles 10-0 (455-167) #7, MP 29/1855, 0-0
Section 4 Chenango Forks 10-0 (344-117) #3, MP #24/1564, 16-8, B-2003, 2004
Section 5 Hornell 10-0 (390-109) #1, 11/1029, 11-2, A- 2009, 2010, 2011
Section 6 Cleveland Hill 8-2 (300-161) #10, MP 55/2928, 0-2
Section 1 Woodlands 9-0 (353-93) #8, MP 25/1612, 0-0
Section 9 O’Neill 8-2 (394-124) #9, MP 88/4066, 0-4
Section 2 Hoosick Falls 10-0 (462-44) #2, MP 33/1945, 4-5
Section 7 Saranac Lake 10-0 (409-97) #6, MP 47/2487, 5-7
Comment: Be careful what you wish for. Skaneateles wanted to be allowed to compete for the sectionals and then the state title. They got their wish. Their first opponent is Chenago Forks, who has beaten Section opponents eight times in the state playoffs, (seven in Class B where they beat those other Lakers, the ones from Cazenovia, three times). If the Skaneateles Lakers can get by the Blue Devils, here comes the windshield. The Hornell Red Raiders are the reigning dynasty of New York State football, with three straight state titles and 48 wins in a row, (second best in the country). And those three titles were in Class B. Like Maine-Endwell, they were dropped down a classification due to a change in school enrollment and are a load and a half at this level. It’s always fun to see which team did the best job in the state of blowing it’s opponent’s doors off. Maine-Endwell outscored it’s opponents by the greatest margin but I think Hoosick falls takes the cake. They not only rolled over their ten opponents by 462-44 but nobody got within 31 points of them all year. The thing is, sometimes a team that has never been challenged all year doesn’t respond well to a close game and Saranac Lake could certainly give them one.

CLASS D
Section 3 Sandy Creek 10-0 (267-109) #3, MP 87/3942, 0-0

Comment: Last year Westmoreland sailed into the State Class D plays carrying a sterling 10-0 (370-118) record and lost to Tioga 34-55 in the first round. The amazing thing was that Tioga scored 55 points against a team that had been giving up only 12 points per game without even attempting a pass. The Tigers look at least as tough this year and I don’t think newbie Sandy Creek is as good as Westmoreland was last year. 2009 champ Randolph won their last several games by an average of 32 points, including a 21-0 win in the sectional finals over #1 state ranked Maple Grove. So watch out for the Cardinals. Tuckahoe really did have a tie game, 27-27 with Haldane. They played four overtimes and couldn’t decide the issue. That’s apparently the limit in New York State football. Moriah shows the weakness of Section 7, although the Vikings have some success in the state tournament in the past. It certainly seems like the Class D champion will come from the western half of the bracket. It’s interesting how highly Map Preps rates Avon.

id to like to point out that despite winning the state title in 1983, shenendehowa (USC, the university of shenendehowa at cliftonpark) LOST 13-9 to Columbia.

thank you.

as you were.

Early returns: Sandy Creek fell behind to Tioga 0-30 in the first quarter They have finally scored in the foruth quarter, down 0-54 and it's 7-54 at the present time.

Tioga used onside kicks and two point conversions to build up their lead, (although in high school sometimes you don't have a real kicker).

CBA saves Section III's bacon with a 31-7 win voer Binghamton. They led 31-0 at halftime and hewld the patriots off to prevent any comeback. I was a bit nervous whe n CBA stopped scoring because Binghamton camer back from a 0-21 deficit to beat West Genesee last year.

Both the "Laker" teams went down, Cazenovia to Maine Endwell 14-50 and Skaneateles to Chenago Forks 21-28. I got home in time to see Conor Herr overthrow a wide-open receiver on a broken coverage that would have tied it.

For the second year in a row we went 1-4 vs. Section 4.

More later.
