This Year’s QUARTERFINAL match-ups: CLASS AA Section 1- New Rochelle 10-0 (389-72) NYSSWA #4 MaxPreps 11/769 States: 13-9 with 4 titles Section 2- Troy 10-0 (464-95) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 2/276 States: 15-5 with 3 titles No common opponents Section 9- Newburgh Free Academy 8-2 (351-119) NYSSWA #16 MaxPreps 25/1253 States: 2-8 with 0 titles Gets a bye since Sections 7-10 have no schools in this classification. Section 4- Elmira Southside 6-4 (352-275) NYSSWA HM MaxPreps 108/3885 States: 1-2 with 1 title Section 3- Cicero-North Syracuse 10-0 (525-107) NYSSWA #6 MaxPreps 1/106 States: 0-0 with 0 titles Elmira beat Horseheads, (I can’t help but think of “The Godfather”) 56-19 and lost to CBA 33-40. CNS beat those teams 61-0 and 61-7. Section 5- Aquinas 9-1 (360-167) NYSSWA #7 MaxPreps 4/431 States: 23-5 with 7 titles Section 6- Lancaster 10-0 (460-103) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 18/1090 States: 0-2 with 0 titles Comments: Aquinas last their opener to Victor, (who lost to Troy in the finals last year) 24-28. Since then they are 9-0 (336-139) with a 17-9 win over Victor, (did they have to change their name?) in the sectional playoffs. The Little Irish have the second most state tourney wins to Chenango Forks and have won the most tournament titles with 7. Nobody has come within 28 points of CNS, 23 points of Lancaster, 18 points of Troy or 14 points of New Rochelle. Tr0py, Glen’s Falls of Class B and Newark Valley of Class C are all tied for the state’s longest winning streak with 23 games. CNS is my alma mater and the largest school in the section. For many years voters turned down school budgets and that kept us down. Now CNS athletics is fully funded and in contention is virtually any sport. We have a superior coach in Dave Kline who has taken some of the best assistants in the area with him. At the sectionals it was observed that we had about twice as many players along the sideline as Baldwinsville, “They look like a college team.” Our line averages 270 points per man and our backs can take it the distance on any play. We have a strong passing game as well. I’m a little bit concerned about the kicking game but not too many high school teams have a good kicking game. What makes me nervous is that the Northstars have never flown this high before: this will be their first state playoff game. They’ve dominated the section but other teams have dominated other sections, some of them just as much. Section 3 teams have had a lot of disappointments vs. Section 4 teams over the years. Kline’s Henninger team lost to Binghamton 20-28 in 2008. Am undefeated West Genesee team jump out to a 21-0 lead on Binghamton in 2011 only to lost 35-36. An undefeated CBA team suffered injuries to several top players in losing to Elmira 18-24 in 2013. Kline’s 2014 Henninger team scored the last 38 points vs. Liverpool, then rolled to a 52-0 halftime lead over Corning, then basically stopped playing, losing the second half 0-16 and then Section 6’s Jamestown scored 4 unanswered TDs to start the semi-final game and the Black Knights lost 12-28. Kline’s quote on the game: “We just didn’t get off the bus.” They had scored 90 points in a row and then given up 44 in a row. You can’t turn it on and off in sports. So things happen. Elmira could be feisty. If we get past them we have blue-bloods like Acquinas, Troy and new Rochelle and a Lancaster team that has had basically the same season CNS has had. It will be nerve racking but exciting and there could be a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I just want to feel at the end that we went as far as we could go and brought honor to the school with the way we played. CLASS A Section 1- Yorktown 10-0 (359-106) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 17/920 States: 8-2 with 2 titles Section 9- Cornwall 9-0 (421-67) NYSSWA #3 MaxPreps 24/1231 States: 7-12 with 0 titles No common opponents. Section 2- Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake 10-0 (473-145) NYSSWA #4 MaxPreps 38/1661 States: 10-6 with 1 title Nobody qualified from 7 or 10 so Burnt Hills has a bye. Section 4- Union-Endicott 9-1 (294-135) NYSSWA #24 MaxPreps 88/3147 States: 3-12 with 2 titles Section 3- Whitesboro 7-3 (317-186) NYSSWA #17 MaxPreps 129/4350 States: 5-7 with 0 titles No common opponents Section 5- Rochester Wilson 9-1 (324-93) NYSSWA #9 MaxPreps34/1493 States: 0-0 with 0 titles Section 6- West Seneca West 10-0 (433-134) NYSSWA #5 MaxPreps 29/1339 States: 0-0 with 0 titles No common opponents Comments: NYSSWA’s #1 ranked team is Garden City on Long Island, part of Section 8, which doesn’t take part in the state playoffs. Union Endicott lost to Vestal 21-24 in the regular season but beat them in the playoffs 21-17. Rochester Wilson lost one game by 2 points. CLASS B Section 1- Pleasantville 9-1 (295-108) NYSSWA #7 MaxPreps 37/1620 States: 1-2 with 3 titles Section 9- Marlboro 9-0 (384-129) NYSSWA #6 MaxPreps 43/1841 States: 3-5 with 0 titles Section 2- Glens Falls 10-0 (383-105) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 10/707 States: 6-2 with 1 titles Section 10- Gouverneur 10-0 (407-106) NYSSWA #15M MaxPreps 82/3040 States: 0-3 with 1 title (They’ve already beaten Section 7’s Peru 52-31) No Common opponents Section 4- Chenango Forks 10-0 (376-65) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 5/432 States: 28-10 with 5 titles Section 3- Homer 10-0 (380-99) NYSSWA #3 MaxPreps 26/1279 States: 0-2 with 1 title No common opponents. Section 5- Hornell 10-0 (400-87) NYSSWA #4 MaxPreps 48/1973 States: 13-7 with 3 titles Section 6- Cheektowaga 9-1 (373-144) NYSSWA #8 MaxPreps 54/2166 States: 2-3 with 0 titles No common opponents. Comments: Homer is 0-2 in the state playoffs. Chenango Forks is 28-10 with 5 titles. That kind of says it all. Hornell is trying to regain some glory as a 3 years tile run and 51 game winning streak from 2009-2011. Cheektowaga lost only to Class A power Sweet Home, 35-40. Pleasant ville lost to Valhalla by a single point, 20-21, (those Valkyries can be tough) but crushed them in the playoffs, 41-14. CLASS C Section 1- Albertus Magnus 9-1 (261-93) NYSSWA #9 MaxPreps 149/4715 States: 0-0 with 0 titles Section 9- Burke Catholic 8-1 (378-153) NYSSWA #3 MaxPreps 135/4398 States: 1-3 with 0 titles Burke Catholic beat Dobb’s Ferry 35-20. Albertus Magnus beat them twice, 33-23 and 17-7 Section 2- Holy Trinity 9-1 (407-87) NYSSWA #4 MaxPreps 79/2958 States: 0-0 with 0 titles Section 10-Ogdensburg Free Academy 9-1 (325-102) NYSSWA #11 MaxPreps 130/4361 States: 2-5 with 0 titles (They beat Section 7’s Saranac Lake 50-20) No common opponents Section 4- Newark Valley 10-0 (424-152) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 61/2425 States: 3-0 with 1 title Section 3- Skaneateles 9-1 (455-148) NYSSWA #4 MaxPreps 52/2099 States: 0-1 with 0 titles No common opponents Section 5- Caledonia-Mumford/ Byron-Bergen 8-2 (267-132) NYSSWA #3 MaxPreps 187/5966 States: 18-4 with 9 titles Section 6- Cleveland Hill 9-1 (394-108) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 104/3816 States: 1-5 with 0 titles No common opponents Comments: Caledonia-Mumford won 5 small school poll titles before there was a state tournament, the first three state tournament titles and another in 2003. This is their first time in the playoffs since 2010, so they are looking to regain former glory. Their 2 losses were by a total of 5 points. Skaneateles lost 21-28 to Section Class B champ Homer. Cleveland Hill lost their opener and are 9-0 (370-78) since. Albertus Magnus got crushed 7-33 by Class D champion Cambridge. Burke Catholic lost their opener and are 8-0, -yes they played one less game- (357-120) since. CLASS D Section 1- Tuckahoe 7-2 (306-162) NYSSWA 16 MaxPreps 325/8854 States: 17-11 with 2 titles Section 9- Millbrook 5-5 (249-282) NYSSWA HM MaxPreps 528/12606 States: 1-4 with 0 titles This is a rematch of a game won on 10/6 by Millbrook 35-34. Tuckahoe beat Haldane 22-21 and 38-31. Millbrook beat them 53-25. Tuckahoe beat Pine Plains 39-6. Millbrook lost to them 26-27 Section 2- Cambridge 10-0 (529-109) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 35/1506 States: 18-12 with 2 titles Section 7- Moriah 9-1 (401-102) NYSSWA #7 MaxPreps 110/3891 States: 6-12 with 0 titles (They beat Section 10’s Tupper Lake 57-6) Cambridge beat Whitehall 50-0 but Moriah beat them 51-0, so advantage Moriah. Section 4- Tioga 9-1 (407-147) NYSSWA #6 MaxPreps 70/2639 States: 7-4 with 1 title Section 3- Dolgeville 10-0 (498-227) NYSSWA #3 MaxPreps 89/3151 States: 7-6 with 1 title No common opponents Section 5- Clyde-Savannah 10-0 (412-162) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 132/4379 States: 4-2 with 1 titles Section 6- Maple Grove 9-1 (318-116) NYSSWA #5 MaxPreps 112/4012 States: 8-4 with 2 titles No common opponents Comments: Defending champion Cambridge’s one loss was 38-43 to Greenwich, a team they beat 40-7 in the sectional playoffs, so let’s pretend it didn’t happen. Tioga’s only loss was 19-22 to defending Class C state champion Newark Valley in their opener. So they are essentially undefeated in this class, as well. The Tigers have feasted on Section 3, Beating Westmoreland 55-34 in 2011, Sandy Creek 54-13 in 2012, Herkimer 44-13 in 2013, Dolgeville 46-22 in 2014, (a game that was 43-6 at halftime) and Sandy creek again, 50-14, in 2015. Moriah also got playoff revenge on Ticonderoga, losing 16-20 in the regular season and winning 28-22 in the playoffs. Both Sections 1 & 9 have only two Class D teams so Tuckahoe and Millbrook had to piece together schedules of whoever, in any class or section, would play them. For that reason, their records could be deceiving. Maple Grove lost 6-26 to Franklinville-Ellicottville during the regular season but gained revenge in the sectional playoffs, 26-15.
