FINALS

CLASS AA

You’ve got to love the nicknames: The Troy Flying Horses of Section 2 won their second straight Class AA New York State title by beating the Lancaster Legends of Section 6, 41-26 in the final at the Carrier Dome. Joe Andreessen of Lancaster was again sent into the game at running back to turn around a game that wasn’t going Lancaster’s way in the second half and Joe performed credibly, gaining 59 of 82 yards in a scoring drive that got the Legends to within one score but Troy responded every time Lancaster scored and kept control of the game thanks to talents of Joey Ward, their 5-9 195 pound tailback with whirling moves, breakaway speed and the endurance to run the ball 38 times for 233 yards, catch 5 passes for 67 yards and get another 21 yards returning kicks for a total of 321 all-purpose yards and 4TDs. The 6-0 220 pound Andreessen rushed for 62 yards and made 13 tackles form his linebacker positon. Last week Andressen was compared to Larry Csonka and the announcers in Sunday’s game compared Ward to Floy Little. Both are seniors but I still can’t find anything on the net about where they might be playing this year. Here is Joey run that made the ESPN Top ten plays:

NYSPHSAA Class AA Quick hits: II-Troy 41, Lancaster 26

CLASS A

West Seneca West of Section 6 ground out a 14-6 championship win over Section1‘s Yorktown. “Yorktown mounted a drive to midfield in the game's final minute, but couldn't finish the drive for a possible tying score, turning the ball over on downs with 37 seconds left.”

CLASS B

For the second straight year, perennial state power and 5 time champ Chenango Forks rolled into the Class B final undefeated but came up short. Last year Section 2’s Glens Falls beat them 47-39, stopping a two point conversion with 30 seconds to go and returning an onsides kick for a TD to clinch it. This year, Section 1’s Pleasantville had an easier time of it, winning 28-14, thanks to three TD runs by quarterback Jack Howe and 4 takeaways.

CLASS C

Skaneateles won Section 3’s first state title since Indian River won Class A in 2014 by defeating Section 2’s Holy Trinity 28-25. The Lakers had a 28-12 lead but gave up one score with 4:45 left, stopping a try for 2. They drove to the Pride’s 15 yard line but superstar quarterback Pat Hackler threw an interception. Joe Tortello threw to Noah Foster 65 yards for a score. The kick made it 28-25 but a pooch kick was recovered by Skaneateles, who ran out the clock. I guess nothing is ever easy for the Lakers, who won 42-41 and 63-56 games to make the final. Hackler wound up passing for 187 yards, running for 140 more and making an interception and 4th down stop on defense.

CLASS D

Section 2’s Cambridge won their second straight title, both over Section 6’s Maple Grove. Last year it took double overtime, 22-21. This year it was decided in regulation, 26-14.
