THE QUARTERFINALS

Class AA

Cicero-North Syracuse’s roller coaster ride continued as they scored three first quarter touchdowns and nothing more until they beat Corning-Painted Post 24-22 with a 19 yard field goal on the game’s last play.

McQuaid Jesuit overcame a 7-20 deficit to defeat Lancaster, the school that beat CNS two years ago, 32-28, to reach the semi-finals

Shenendehowa crushed Pine Bush 41-7, shutting down a rushing attack that had been averaging 378 yards a game.

New Rochelle scored twice in the fourth quarter to pull away from Utica Proctor, 21-7, leaving CNS to pursue a title for section 3 in this classification alone.

The Semi-Final match-ups:

3 Cicero-North Syracuse 8-3 (249-203) NYSSWA #14 MaxPreps 53/3187 States: 3-2 with 0 titles
Lost to: Liverpool 0-10, RFA 27-34, Utica Proctor 0-32 - beat Utica Proctor 28-25
Vs.
5 McQuaid Jesuit 10-0 (380-150) NYSSWA #4 MaxPreps 19/1680 States: 1-0 with 0 titles

2 Shenendehowa 10-1 (417-102) NYSSWA #9 MaxPreps 3/427 States: 8-5 with 3 titles
Lost to: Shaker 14-28
Vs.
1 New Rochelle 11-0 (428-88) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 5/760 States: 16-11 with 2 titles

Comment: CNS is clearly the weakest link here, although a new Northstar team may be emerging that will dominate next year. McQuaid Jesuit seems clearly the better team based on their season’s record but they’ve never bene here before. MaxPreps likes Shenendehowa but New Rochelle seems the clear favorite here.

Class A

Carthage rolled over Union Endicott 38-14, building up a 31-0 third quarter lead. With CNS being such an underdog and everybody else from Section 3 having lost, they are the sections; best hope for a state title this year.

Bill Scharr wasn’t at quarterback but Canandaigua Academy still managed to beat South Park of Buffalo, 24-6.

Defending state champ Cornwall made it to the semi-finals by the skin of their teeth, beating Queensbury 28-27 on a blocked extra point.
State football: Queensbury falls in Class A game

Rye routed Auburn 49-13, ending the Maroon’s Cinderella run into the playoffs, (2006 it isn’t), 49-13.
Football: Declan Lavelle, Quinn Kelly connect on four TDs as Rye rolls into final four

The Semi-Final match-ups:

3 Carthage 10-1 (497-160) NYSSWA #4 MaxPreps 16/1618 States: 2-3 with 0 titles
Lost to: Utica Proctor 7-12
Vs.
5 Canandaigua Academy 10-1 (361-155) NYSSWA #8 MaxPreps 24/1871 States: 4-1 with 1 title
Lost to Victor 14-31

9 Cornwall Central 10-0 (383-160) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 14/1465 States: 11-13 with 1 title (defending state champs)
Vs.
1 Rye 10-1 (397-147) NYSSWA #7 MaxPreps 23/1820 States: 16-5 with 3 titles
Lost to: Somers 24-28

Comments: MaxPreps reduced their rating for Carthage from 7/1024 to 16/1680. Why? Maybe because the best Section 4 could serve up in this class was a 2-7 team. The semi-finals should both be competitive games that could go either way but I think the Comets might be the best team by a small margin. They beat Auburn 55-7 a week before Rye beat them 49-13.

Class B

Solvay’s great comeback season ended with a thud as they hit the windshield of perennial power Chenango Forks. “Top-ranked Forks put up the first 41 points against the fourth-ranked Section 3 Class B champions, who came in 10-0. The final was 48-15, Solvay making late hay once the Devils’ starters were sensibly relieved of duty.”
HS Football: Dominant outing sends Chenango Forks to another football final four

Western New York Maritime stormed back after Livonia took a 22-8 lead to win 40-29 and move into the semi-finals. I hope Chenango Forks beats them just because they have a better name.
WNY Maritime's second-half surge too much for Livonia

Schuylerville beat Potsdam 28-8 “on a frigid, snow-covered field”. Potsdam felt the cold the most, breaking the shut-out with 6:18 left in the game.

Port Jervis used it’s athletes to defeat Ardsley, 20-14. “"Our biggest nightmare is a team that’s going to scramble around and throw balls up to athletes," Ardsley coach Dan DiFalco said. "It’s one of our weaknesses that we’ve covered up and we’re able to work through all season. They had a ton of athletes and exploited us."
Football: Late mistakes cost Ardsley in state regional loss to Port Jervis

The Semi-Final match-ups:

4 Chenango Forks 11-0 (412-130) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 11/1340 States: 31-12 with 5 titles
Vs.
6 Western New York Maritime Charter/Health Sciences 10-1 (314-132) NYSSWA #5 MaxPreps 52/3176 States: 1-0 with 0 titles Lost to Canisius 0-40

2 Schuylerville 10-1 (359-125) NYSSWA #6 MaxPreps 59/3375 States: 5-3 with 0 titles Lost to: Glens Falls 13-34
Vs.
9 Port Jervis 9-2 (306-191) NYSSWA #9 MaxPreps 69/3861 States: 2-5 with 0 titles
Lost to: Middletown 14-57, Marlboro 20-28

Comment: When Chenango Forks smells a state title they are hard to beat. They’ve won 5 of them and have more state tournament wins than any school in any class. I don’t see anyone heading them off this year.

Class C

Lowville’s powerhouse, one of the great Section 3 Class C teams ever who had out-scored their opponent by 37 points a game, ran into a slightly greater powerhouse, Section 4’s defending state champion Susquehanna Valley, who had outscored theirs by 42 points per game and came up short, 36-44. Two fourth quarter interceptions were the difference, breaking a 36-36 tie and snuffing out the Red Raiders’ last chance.
HS Football: This time, it's Susquehanna Valley in a state quarterfinal thriller

The Sabers will face another big threat in Section 6’s Southwestern, who demolished Section 4’s Warsaw-Letchworth, 54-8, after building up a 39-0 halftime lead.
Tywon Wright's five touchdown-effort fuels another big Southwestern win

Gouverneur won a defensive duel over Stillwater, 10-2. They do play defense in this classification.

Valahalla surprised Chester, to whom they had lost 22-42 earlier in the season, with a 19-8 upset.
Football: Valhalla completes a season-long comeback with a surprise win over Chester

The Semi-Final match-ups:

4 Susquehanna Valley 11-0 (516-92) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 9/1313 States: 4-1 with 1 title (defending state champs)
Vs.
6 Southwestern 11-0 (486-75) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 25/1888 States: 9-2 with 2 titles

10 Gouverneur (beat 7 Saranac Lake 53-0) 10-0 (407-76) NYSSWA #3 MaxPreps 28/2161 States: 1-4 with 0 titles
Vs.
1 Valhalla 7-2 (227-192) NYSSWA #11 MaxPreps 249/8794 States: 4-1 with 1 title
Lost to: Chester 22-42, Hackley 14-35

Comments: They say defense wins championships and three of these team have yet to give up their 100th point. Susquehanna Valley-Southwestern will be quite a confrontation and I think the winner will win the state title.

Class D

Predictably, Frankford-Schuyler fell victim to Section 4 powerhouse Tioga, who won their 8th straight match-up with Section 3 teams in the state quarterfinals. This one was actually closer than most of these games, but 43-20 is convincing enough.
HS Football: Another Class D state quarterfinal, another win for Tioga's Tigers

Clymer-Sherman-Panama surrounded Notre Dame of Batavia, 47-14. “"They're a very impressive team, they're one of the best high school teams I've ever seen," Notre Dame assistant Mike Rapone said.”

Moriah defeated Warrensburg with an 85 yard walk-off pick 6, 28-22.

Tuckahoe beat Section 3 runner up Waterville. 12-6. All three of the Section 3 runners up, (Classes AA, a and D), lost.
Football: Freshman QB steps in, Tuckahoe moves on to state semifinals

The Semi-Final match-ups:

4 Tioga 11-0 (467-209) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 71/3889 States: 10-6 with 1 title
Vs.
6 Clymer Central/Sherman/Panama 9-1 (357-86) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 36/2592 States: 6-4 with 1 title (defending state champs) Lost to: Franklinville/Ellicottville/West Valley Central 8-24

7 Moriah 7-3 (294-167) NYSSWA #8 MaxPreps 212/8440 States: 9-14 with 0 titles
Vs.
1 Tuckahoe 9-1 (326-179) NYSSWA #7 MaxPreps 205/7898 States: 17-12 with 2 titles

Comment: The Tioga-Clymer game should be quite a battle and the winner will surely be the favorite to win the state title.
