This year’s field: CLASS AA Section 1: New Rochelle 10-0 (304-124) NYSSWA #3 MaxPreps 17/1127 States: 15-7 with 2 titles Section 9: Newburgh Free Academy 8-2 (342-101) NYSSWA #11 MaxPreps 13/925 States: 2-7 with 0 titles Newburgh is the team that waxed Henninger in the Dome, 64-0 to open the season. The very next game they were waxed 0-31 by Archbishop Stepinanc, (tied with Aquinas for #1 in the state per the NYSSWA: they are a Section 8- New York City- team and thus are not in the tournament), and later lost to Monroe-Woodbury 20-24, which they avenged with a 23-0 shutout in the sectional final. These teams have had no common opponents. Section 2: Saratoga Springs 10-0 (401-128) NYSSWA #7 MaxPreps 2/288 States: 2-3 with 0 titles BYE, since Sections 7-10 don’t have AA teams. Section 3: Liverpool 9-1 (397-105) NYSSWA #10 MaxPreps 5/587 States: 2-2 with 0 titles Section 4: Elmira Southside 10-0 (539-172) NYSSWA #12MaxPreps 9/740 States: 1-1 with 0 titles Elmira has scored at least 50 points in their last eight games, including an 80-8 squeaker over Central Square and a 59-6 win over Nottingham. Liverpool beat those teams 42-0 and 33-0, respectively. They Lost to CBA 17-28 but came back to beat them 35-9 in the Sectional final. The ranking say Liverpool is better but those points… Section 5: Aquinas 10-0 (332-111) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 3/293 States: 20-5 with 6 titles Section 6: Orchard Park 9-1 (384-173) NYSSWA #9 MaxPreps 15/946 States: 9-9 with 2 titles Orchard Park lost to Pittsford 28-41.These teams have no common opponents. CLASS A Section 1: Our Lady Of Lourdes 8-2 (290-137) NYSSWA#4 MaxPreps 34/1863 States: 0-0 with 0 titles Section 9: Cornwall 9-1 (413-111) NYSSWA #10 MaxPreps 26/1578 States: 7-10 with 0 titles Lourdes lost to Yorktown 14-27 and 7-13 to Rye, who they later beat 14-7 in the sectional final. . Cornwall lost to Cardinal Hayes of New York City, 14-37. These teams have no common opponents. Section 2: Amsterdam 7-3 (341-198) NYSSWA # 7MaxPreps 79/3621 States: 11-5 with 2 titles BYE, because Sections 7-10 have no A reams Amsterdam lost to Class B #1 ranked Cazenovia 0-47, then to Queensbury 20-28, and Troy 21-26, all in their first three games. Section 3: Whitesboro 9-1 (339-105) NYSSWA #12 MaxPreps 46/2430 States: 4-5 with 0 titles Section 4: Maine-Endwell 10-0 (440-139) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 6/642 States: 16-2 with 5 titles Maine Endwell is going for an incredible 5th straight state title, (the last three before this in Class B) and 62nd straight win. They played one Section 3 team this year, defeating Class AA Corcoran 62-24.The two teams have no common opponents. Whitesboro’s one loss was to Class AA Utica Proctor 10-14 in their opening game. Section 5: Brockport 9-1 (209-132) NYSSWA #11 MaxPreps 38/2115 States: 0-0 with 0 titles Section 6: Buffalo South Park 9-1 (404-143) NYSSWA #3 Max Preps 11/781 States: 0-0 with 0 titles Brockport lost to Greece-Athena 12-21. South Park lost to Canisius 20-23. They have no common opponents. CLASS B Section 1 Westlake 8-2 (266-52) NYSSWA #9 MaxPreps 219/4928 States: 0-0 with 0 titles Section 9 Marlboro 9-0 (473-103) NYSSWA #3 MaxPreps 45/2385 States: 3-4 with 0 titles Westlake lost to Pleasantville 6-20 and Nanuet 0-12 but came back to beat Nanuet 6-0 in the Sectional final. These teams had no common opponents. Marlboro will be glad to know that Schalmont isn’t in the tournament this year: they’ve lost to them the last two years by a combined 101 points. Section 2 Schuylerville 10-0 (435-69) NYSSWA #4 MaxPreps 19/1265 States: 2-2 with 0 titles Section 10 Franklin Academy (Malone) 10-0 (372-150) NYSSWA #16 MaxPreps 146/5506 States: 0-2 with 0 titles These teams had no common opponents. I’m impressed that Schuylerville crushed Schalmont the team that was terrorizing opponents in the last two state playoffs, (until they ran into Maine Endwell) the last two years. And they did it 42-0. Franklin Academy was clearly the best Class B team in section 10 but you can see by the rankings that the completion is low in the north country. Section 3 Cazenovia 10-0 (413-64) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 10/748 States: 1-7 with 0 titles Section 4 Waverly 8-2 (301-131) NYSSWA #18 MaxPreps 32/1771 States: 1-2 with 0 titles Waverly lost to Chenango Valley 12-22 and to Oswego Free Academy 12-13 and turned around to beat them 15-13 in the Sectional playoffs the next week. Cazenovia would appear to be the heavy favorite but their quarterback was injured in their Sectional championship win. Also their all-time state playoff record is a dismal 1-7. But then they keep running into Chenango Forks and Maine-Endwell and neither is in Class B this year. Section 5 Batavia 10-0 (443-125) NYSSWA #6 MaxPreps 27/1586 States: 0-1 with 0 titles Section 6 Cheektowaga 10-0 (408-138) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 30/1719 States: 1-2 with 0 titles These teams had no common opponents. CLASS C Section 1 Dobbs Ferry 7-0 (202-26) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 140/5414 States: 19-4 with 4 titles Section 9 Liberty 10-0 (453-66) NYSSWA #5 MaxPreps 56/2721 States: 0-1 with 0 titles Yes, Dobbs Ferry has played only 6 games. They only bothered to schedule 6 regular season games and got a bye in their first round of their sectional playoffs and then only had to beat one other team. It sounds like Section 1 could use some more Class C teams. These teams have had no common opponents. Section 2 Greenwich 10-0 (429-72) NYSSWA #3 MaxPreps 40/2129 States: 1-1 with 0 titles Section 10 Gouverneur 7-3 (292-117) NYSSWA #22 MaxPreps 199/6845 States: 0-2 with 0 titles Gouverneur lost to Franklin Academy 21-25, Canton 16-20 and Ogdensburg Free Acadmey 12-22, who they came back to beat 21-0 in the state playoffs. They then beat Seciton 7’s AuSable Valley 24-0 in the play-in game. For the first time since 2008, the section 2 Class C champions was not Hoosick Falls, against whom the 7/10 winner has been fairly competitive, even beating them in 2010. Section 3 Utica-Notre Dame 9-1 (447-167) NYSSWA #7 23/1440 States: 0-2 with 0 titles Section 4 Chenango Forks 9-1 (339-111) NYSSWA #1 14/929 States: 23-9 with 4 titles Forks is going for their third straight state Class C title. Their only loss was to Maine-Endwell, who is now back in Class A and that was close, 21-28. Forks has stuck a fork in man a Section III school over the eyars in the state playoffs, including Notre Dame, (57-14 last year). These teams have a common opponent: Newark Valley, the only team to beat Notre Dame this year, ((32-14 in their opener). Chenango Forks beat Newark Valley 42-15. Section 5 Haverling (Bath) 10-0 (454-62) NYSSWA # 4 MaxPreps 24/1475 States: 3-4 with 0 titles Section 6 Maple Grove-Chautauqua Lake 9-1 (334-131) NYSSWA #6 MaxPreps 53/2678 States: 7-4 with 2 titles Maple Grove lost their opener to University Prep 14-34. These teams have no common opponents. CLASS D Section 1 Tuckahoe 2-6 (101-225) NYSSWA Not Ranked MaxPreps 512/12,752 States: 16-10 with 2 titles Section 9 Roscoe/Downsville/Livingston Manor 6-3 (212-187) NYSSWA Not Ranked MaxPreps 506/12,624 States: 0-1 with 0 titles Those are not misprints. There are so few Class D schools in this area that a team that had won only one regular season game won Section 1 and a team with three losses won Section 9. R/D/LM is a hybrid schools that played one school, Elred three times, beating them 40-0, 39-6 and 40-8. If they’d played a fourt time, my money would be on R?D?LM with at least 30 points. They lost to rennsalaer 12-31, Liberty 6-48 and Chester 13-62. Tuckahie also lost to Chester, 6-41 along with Woodlands 6-26, Hackley 20-30, Riverdale 12-32, Dobbs Ferry 6-41 and Rye Neck 6-25. There are, in fact, two Class D schools in Section 1 and four in Section 9, so you get a mess like this. Can we please go Big Schools/Small Schools? Section 2 Whitehall 9-0 (294-63) NYSSWA #4MaxPreps 84/3753 States: 0-0 with 0 titles Section 7 Ticonderoga 9-1 (307-107) NYSSWA #5 MaxPreps 139/5406 States: 3-5 with 0 titles Ticonderoga lost to Moriah 6-28 but came back to beat them 6-0 in overtime in the playoffs. Both teams beat AuSable Valley. Whitehall beat them 41-0 and Ti beat them 35-7. Section 3 Sandy Creek 8-2 (312-165) NYSSWA#7 MaxPreps 212/7095 States: 0-1 with 0 titles Section 4 Tioga 9-1 (497-217) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 35/1900 States: 4-4 with 0 titles Tioga has had Section 3 teams for breakfast, lunch and dinner plus a midnight snack the last four years, beating Westmoreland, Sandy Creek, Herkimer and Dolgeville by a combined 198-82, (a 50-21 average). Then they’ve been beaten in the next round by a Section 6 team each year, (the last three to state champion Randolph). Sandy Creek tries again this season. Tioga’s one loss was the Newark Valley, 32-35. Sandy creek lost their first two games to Beaver River 14-21 and Thousand Island 14-38. The two teams had no common opponents. Section 5 Bishop Kearney 8-2 (360-194) NYSSWA # 3 MaxPreps 58/2890 States: 0-0 with 0 titles Section 6 Franklinville/Ellicotville 8-1 (297-83) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 102/4407 States: 0-1 with 0 titles Bishop Kearney lost to St. Mary’s 36-44 and Farrell 28-42. This -M, (after beating three time defending state champions Randolph 32-12 in their opener), lost to Portville, 20-28. The two teams had no common opponents. Overall: There’s plenty of new blood in the playoffs this year. Six teams have never been to the state playoffs Four have been there once and lost and three more are 0-2. There are nine former state champions in the field but 29 teams have never won it. None of the Section 3 champions in the field have ever won a state title and their combined record is only 6-15. Section 1 is 50-21 with 8 titles won. Section 2 is 17-11 with 2 titles. Section 4 is 45-18 with 9 titles, (all from two teams: Maine-Endwell and Chenango Forks). Section 5 is 23-10 with 6 titles, (all from Aquinas). Section 6 is 17-16 with 4 titles. Section 7 is 3-5 with no title. Section 9 is 12-22 with no titles. Section 10 is 0-4 with no titles.
