262 plays through 3 games isn't even top 5

this is not negative anglerman, i'm just shocked that any team could have run more plays that syracuse. college football is crazy

here's one way of looking at the number of plays

2010, we had 64 plays a game

This year we average 87

our current pace is 36% more snaps

we played 13 games in 2010.

36% x 13 = 4.7. it's almost like this offense is on pace to effectively play almost 5 more games.

87 plays per game for a season is crazy, i know, it'll come down - but still...

It really is remarkable.

Another way to look at it is that we've averaged 13.7 possessions-per-game this season (15 vs. N'western, 13 vs. USC, 13 vs. Stony Brook).

Last season in the first three games we averaged 12 in regulation (13 vs. Wake (didn't include the 2 OT), 12 vs. URI, 11 vs. USC).

All those extra plays, and an extra 2 possessions per game really broadens our margin of error, which I think we desperately need as a program.

i wonder how much hay and/or tiller held back their pace

It helps when you get big chunk plays and are really good on 3rd down. Extends possessions.

15th in 3rd down conversions, almost 53%. 56 plays of 10 yds or more in 3 games vs 142 in 12 last year. If they keep up this pace it would end up at 242 for the year, which is one less than Oregon had last year.

being good on third down usually just means you're good in general and get third and shorts. i think that teams that are good on 3rd down are good on other downs.

i mostly just care about yards - if you get a lot of yards, you're going to be good at 3rd downs. red zone stats can fill in whatever's missing from yards - that's what separates good offenses from each other. we have room to improve there.

Why will it come down? I'm not sure that it will...

USC and Northwestern are two of the better teams we will play all season. And Stony Brook (and I haven't seen the plays, but I'm assuming) actually was a decrease from our average in those two games.

I don't see any reason why it won't stay around 85 all season.

i don't think USC and NW were two of the better defenses we will and it's not fair to expect the offense to continue on this pace.

Rutgers defense is bordering on elite. UConn looks pretty good too. Both are much better than anything we have seen.

wouldn't put them up there, yet. I think it's safest to judge a team in their games against the best competition. Not sure USF is going to be close to their best competition. Arkansas will definitely be telling, though.

If it does come down, it won't be very far. I actually think the offense will get better when Pugh comes back and Hickey moves over to Alexanders spot. Lemon will become more of a factor as the season progresses. Also the young running backs will get better, which will help us retain possession of the ball.

they aren't better teams though. Both of their offenses are horrendous.

Millhouse your post isn't negative at all. I think you're realizing that this team may have something going here.

Swc75 is correct, when Pugh come back the offense should get even better. The return of Fleming should improve the vertical passing game.
