Interesting note was made during the offseason how bad our D allegedly was...when metrics were brought up...some folks suggested the only stat that mattered was "Points Allowed"

The exact comment was "we gave up 79 ppg in conference this past season. Only Louisville gave up more. How much worse do you really think it could get?!"

We are currently at 80 a game vs the likes of Lemoyne and Albany. It's worse.

Last in conference in points allowed per game. 167th in KenPom DRtg along with peer schools Kennesaw St, Montana St, and Fordham.

The help defense on this team is worse than many AAU teams… and yet still not as bad as the individual 1 v 1 defense and how they attack screens.

I truly would like to watch a bunch of practices to see what’s being taught and how the team responds to the direction in practice. There has to be a link to what’s being coached up and what we see on the court.

Maliq's defense has gotten even better at Duke. I'm sure it helps that he's not being left on an island by himself. I get that he let it be known that he didn't want to play a small ball 5, but that might have been qualified with "... AT Syracuse". I think that might have more to do with being underappreciated here by the staff. Depending on the metric, Brown is one of the best defenders in the country this season.

I wish I knew what the plan was for SU's defense, let alone what they practice, because they're in another world. Two of Bell's "transition" buckets against Albany were because he didn't hustle back on defense and was still in the other half-court when Albany turned it over.

This is what I was getting at in my other post in the Red thread too. Over reliance on guys making individual plays (on defense too) like Maliq and then Judah and Quadir as well vs a sound defensive strategy deploying good tactics attacking screens and help rotations.

Yeah...and I think we're slowly getting to the point where it's normal to wonder how many of the mythical 20 wins was simply the players making plays

It’s so disheartening seeing this reality come to light. We all wanted and still want Red to succeed but there is such a blatant gap in coaching chops that shows little sign of closing and improving. I’d love to see something click and we smash Gtown and go on a run but realistically if something isn’t well managed you just don’t see those kind of things happen.

I feel like were gonna need a defensive minded coach to get back to fundamentals and mindset on the defensive end for the next hire, think along the lines of Huggins, Jamie Dixon types

Nothing “mythical” about the 20 wins. They were real, honest to God wins.

Huggins type? I know what you actually mean but it immediately sounded awful!

If it’s the two transition buckets Bell made in the 2nd half, that’s not true at all. One was after a made Albany FT when we turned it over near mid court and a lucky bounce found Davis who kicked it ahead to Bell and the other was Bell dribbling more than half the court for a dunk.

Searched that line. What a look back. One of my posts from that thread here and below:

Just because you write off his all defense due to just his steals doesn't mean it's accurate. Those steals, though, do matter.

He had many substantial defensive metrics where he was ranked high in numerous categories within the conference. I've posted them below.

I have no idea why people think the defense will be better. JJ, Bell, PG TBD, a frosh and Lampkin. That's not a recipe for defensive prowess.

DBPM last year:
Lampkin: 0.8
JJ: -0.5
Bell: 0.0
Carlos: 1.1

Maliq: 4.0
Let's have some fun, Kadary: 4.1

Maliq's resume from last year in terms of conference (meaning all the conference players) for defensive rankings:
All-Defense ACC
RPG: 11th
SPG: 1st
BPG: 14th
Def WS: 11th
Def BPM: 5th
Def Rating: 10th
Def Rebound %: 14th
Steal %: 1st
Block %: 14th

The defense is going to be worse and it is very likely that our offense will be more inefficient with this roster.

BTW, to be clear, just losing Maliq is a big deal. The kid went to Duke. Combined with losing the raw talent of Judah (even if he was frustrating and did his own thing a lot), it is very bad. When you are picking up guys from mid major conferences (I know Lampkin is not) as a matter of form, you are in trouble. There are only a few Dalton Knechts and many, many, many more guys that are just average to below average when they level up.

I know but to be fair if Huggy wasnt a mess I feel like he could kill it here and would be whats needed

His many issues aside I would like an established coach who isn’t as old as he is to be honest

The entire game is players making plays - or not making plays. The coach's job is to put them in good position to make plays.
