Johns Hopkins has done quite a bit of work in the first nine days of the season.

The Blue Jays own three Top 20 wins already — before several teams have even suited up for their first game. They were rewarded with an early boost in the KANE Men’s DI Media Poll for Week 1.

The Jays jumped up four spots to No. 4. Still in the Top 5, though, are three teams who have yet to see regular season action. No. 1 Notre Dame opens its season Wednesday vs. Cleveland State, No. 3 Cornell opens its season Saturday vs. Lehigh, and No. 5 Princeton has perhaps one of the biggest games of the weekend when it travels to No. 10 Penn State.

The Nittany Lions climbed up in the poll, cracking the Top 10 after a decisive win at Villanova on Sunday. They are just ahead of North Carolina, which won handily vs. Michigan.

Delaware, dramatic winners over Utah in Salt Lake City, and Providence, which is 2-0, enter the Top 20.

There isn't a long wait for Top 20 games this week. At 5 p.m. Monday, No. 2 Syracuse hosts No. 16 Towson.

2) Syracuse

#HHH led 10-1 at halftime in a 13-5 win over Vermont on Friday night. Orange shooting was muffled by Catamount goalie Ryan Daly. SU shot just 7 for its last 37. Looks like both Joey Spallina and Owen Hiltz lost about 15 pounds. Spallina had 10 points.

FOGO depth may become an issue. SU appears to be stronger at close defense with transfer Michael Grace and a healthy Riley Figuerias. The SSDM group is also upgraded. Lots to like here. SU is a solid #2 right now in my book. Spots #4 through #12 are interchangeable until we have more data and tape.

SU defender Billy Dwan III was my guest last week on the Quintessential Podcast. Syracuse squares off with Towson on Monday at 5 p.m. (ACCNx), and Otto is at Maryland on Saturday.

2.  Syracuse (3-0)
While Hopkins has garnered a lot of attention for jumping out to a 3-0 start vs. ranked teams, the Orange matched the Blue Jays record on Monday night. While their performances have gotten a lot of shine, I don’t think the record has been properly appreciated. Yes, all three wins came in the confines of the Dome (as opposed to on the back of a trans-continental trip), but ’Cuse has yet to be tested vs. a slate that included a 2024 NCAA Tournament team and two perennial conference title contenders. All I’m saying is that the Orange have already proven more to me than they have to others.

And what have they proven? That they’re the bonafide title contender that we thought they were in the preseason. Now, there really isn’t much space between that and winning an NCAA Quarterfinal game, so there are only potholes between now and the third week in May as far as my opinion of Gary Gait’s team is concerned. So we watch to see if they can avoid them.

(As an aside, is there anything worse than the moment when you hit a terrible pothole and have to wait to feel whether you popped a tire. Terrifying.)
