In recent years, “Week 0” has come to exist in NCAA lacrosse.

Look back 10 years ago, and there was one men’s DI game on Feb. 1. The following weekend in 2014, there were 18. From Feb. 1-2, 2025, there were 18 games.

So the KANE Men’s DI Media Poll exists in a bit of a grey state after the first set of games. There were two Top 20 matchups, including one in the Top 10, but half of last week’s Top 10 is still yet to debut. Think of Week 0 as a recalibration of the preseason rankings and a reassessment considering scrimmage results and live game action for just under half of DI.

There are significant moves, though: While Notre Dame is still clear at No. 1 and won’t play until Feb. 12, Utah and Rutgers earned their way into the poll with wins on Feb. 1.

The Utes took care of then-No. 19 Ohio State. Led by freshman Luke McNamara’s five goals and Cody Hart’s four, the ASUN champs put on an impressive display. Rutgers put in a workmanlike 10-6 performance against Lehigh.

Throughout the rest of the poll, things largely stayed the same. Some teams got more benefit of the doubt because of playing live action: Maryland went up a spot after a decisive win against Richmond, and Penn State inched up too. Johns Hopkins remained at No. 8 after showing poise against Denver, and the Pioneers shifted back a few spots and altered the order of teams 10-15.

Week 0 also narrowed in the volume a bit, going down from 12 teams receiving votes to nine.

Check out the full KANE Men’s Division I Media Poll here. Members of the media will vote each week through the 2025 season, with Week 1 coming on Feb. 10.

Quint's in...

2: Syracuse
#HHH welcomed Jacksonville to the Dome with a 24-5 shellacking. They wasted little time dispatching Jax, building a 10-goal margin through the game’s first 22 minutes. 5,041 fans enjoyed the offense and the Dome Dogs. Dolphins coach John Galloway was (59-8) as a starting goalie at Syracuse. The Orange looked like the #2 team in the country. Jimmy McCool got the start in net. Sam English ran first midfield and played on EMD. He’s omnipresent. Joey Spallina and Michael Leo had five points apiece. Michael Grace joined Riley Figuerias and Billy Dwan III on close defense. Dwan will be my guest this week on the Quintessential Podcast. Look for the link in our media section. Vermont is at Cuse on Friday at 6 p.m. on ESPN+. The Orange should be fun to watch in 2025.

I think Quint just has Maryland at #3, so he can drop them farther when they lose.

I like that Quint doesn't have Princeton so high. Right now, I.L. seems to be band wagoning them. Princeton might turn out to be very good and deserve to be top 5, but I think they need to beat someone. Unfortunately, I could end up eating my own hat, as Maryland visits Princeton in a few weeks.

Interesting that Quint has UNC at #11 and Duke at #12.

Actually, I thought the btn+ broadcast of the Maryland game was fine and I was only watching it on a notebook computer. I guess I have sat up high in Byrd so much over the years, that I have gotten used to that view. I like being able to see the X's and O's, that is, be able to see where players really are on the field.

I think Quint tries to be a contrarian to get a rise out of people. It certainly works on Hopkins people.

I've been thinking a lot about UNC. They are easy to dismiss based on past performance, but they might actually be pretty good this year. It also sounds like they've been doing well in their scrimmages (though one was to OSU), and while Quint likes to rail against scrimmage results, it's pretty clear he factors them into his rankings, at least at the start of the year.

It does sound like the Heels may have lost their top defender in Peter Thoman to a knee injury (just based on what I've read on FanLax) so that could impact their ceiling. Apparently Duffy is back to his normal self after last year's injury. 11 seems a bit high, but they could be a fast riser. That Michigan game is really fascinating.

Duke at 12 seems fair, I know they just had a big win, but I still think they are probably fifth in the ACC just from a talent perspective. Could be very wrong! Perhaps Malever is all the way back from his injury and will take them to a new level. Just don't see it yet.

Yale at 4 is a surprise, though I wonder how far the Bulldogs would have gone last year if Machado Rodriguez didn't get hurt. Their FOGOs fell apart last year. Might be a very different team with him back.

did yale suddenly learn how to play defense without telling anybody but quint? #4 is an extremely aggressive ranking until they can prove they can get some stops...again, scoring has never been their problem...

It might come back to haunt me but I agree with you on UNC, I think they could have a monster year if they can keep reasonable health which may already be off to a bad start per their fanlax thread. They are very strong in goal and FOGO and have Duffy back and some very solid senior and 5th year transfers ala SU last year who should help him and Petro out.. Now obviously Breschi could still blow this up but at some point talent can overcome coaching and they maybe back at that point again.

It's bad enough I have to do this on the hoops and FB board, but I didn't expect to have to do it on the Lax board.

Anyone who wants to continue the sniping and name-calling can do so if they want by PM. Leave it off this board, or you will find yourself on the outside looking in.

Sheesh. Behave like the adults (I assume) you are. First and final warning.

Just to piggy back off of 079 one of the things that makes this board great is the difference of opinion. Yes its an SU board first and foremost so we will get a little pr ickly at times lol, but I know myself and most others enjoy hearing from nyclax, zack, our UVA fans including wgdsr amd hoo and others who stop by. I certainly encourage everyone to keep posting, were not looking for an echo chamber here.
