Really hoping this team can make a run. Don't even care if they make the NCAA tournament all that much.
Just want to see us play true position basketball. We have been playing without a true 4, which makes Dolezaj's help worse at the 5 on both ends. We have been undersized at the 1,3, and 4 spots. Once again all of this is because Edwards and Ajax haven't been able to help and Dole hasn't been able to slide to the 4 until possibly recently. Guerrier's explosiveness has been slowed down at the 4, when his aggressive ceiling was best on the team last year. He should have some Jerry Stackhouse growing in him. Ajax at 215, and Edwards should be finding some post-up skills inside, that's how much Carmelo weighed, and he posted up all the time. That hurts our offense big time. If the 09-10 team was fine with only 2 three-point shooters on the floor, this team has the potential to be also.
Last year we were small at the one all game, lacking a true 1, lacking a true post-up scorer, a backup scoring forward, and missing a stronger post-up guy to sub for Dolez at the 4, but at least we played true positions. We rebounded some out of the 5 though, which really helped.
IMO, Ajax and Edwards have been the key for us since midseason, and we haven't known it. I think the biggest part of this is three-fold. One the zone or the big coaching hasn't been able to force hesitation on the foul-line/mid to low passing allowing the zone to rotate out of them. Second, they are not running enough toughness drills in the low post on the offensive end. They don't have to grab 5 offensive boards but they should be able to get 2-3 tip-ins each, on top of 4 post up layups combined with a true point like Kadary. Third, they just weren't ready. If we had played them more in-game maybe, (or maybe not) we get them a couple of weeks earlier. Maybe this is the time we come out of the porcelain eggshell? Sad it took this long. We can only hope. I will give it a rest for the rest of the season.
