Flew from Raleigh to Philly Sunday morning and there were two gentlemen in the row behind us with Military Bowl patches on their briefcases. Of course Mrs. C and I were all decked out in Cuse gear. Complimented me on the team's impressive performance and asked what I thought the reason for the 180 degree turnaround was. One of them noted the terrible turnout by Duke fans acknowledging the cold, windy weather but noted he saw a lot of orange in the stadium. He noticed the "big group on the 40 of the visitors side" in addition to the SU seats in the lower corner. Said they will be watching the Louisville game with interest and may be coming to Syracuse for the finale.

Does anyone know how many Duke fans wee really at the game? Stadium looked completely empty on TV.

The stadium, which was very nice and was well-staffed, has a capacity of about 40k. I'd say less than 10k were in attendance and by the end of the third quarter, the Syracuse fans may have out-numbered the Duke fans.

As an aside, I thought Duke's band did a nice job despite the conditions.

Edit: Announced attendance was 16,286

I don't know if I'm jealous of them for their job or if I feel terribly sorry for them.

We were the big group on the 40!

I don’t want to hear anybody ever complain about our fan support again. Even in our worst seasons we had more fans in the stands than Duke had Saturday. It was incredibly bad. I asked Cuseregular , where the student section was, and he said he didn’t think there was one. By the fourth quarter there was probably 50 Duke fans left

Agreed, the atmosphere at Wallace Wade was abysmal. At our worst, the Dome was never remotely close to being that empty.

In fairness, Duke stinks and it was freezing, so I don’t blame anyone for not attending.

Duke had a clear bag policy that was different than any stadium I have been to over the past two years (Carrier Dome, Western Michigan, Clemson, NC State, Maryland, Liberty).

As my wife and I entered the Duke stadium we were told “we are not a clear bag stadium.” I informed him that the female Duke fan ahead of entered with a clear bag the size of a purse and we were told our clear bag is to big (even though it was standard clear bag which given to all season ticket holders last year by SU). He then pointed to a wooden box with a small slot in it and said only bags that can fit in this slot can be brought into the stadium. We then removed the items we had inside our clear bag and he threw our SU clear bag in the garbage.

Thought It was BS considering every other MAC, Big Ten, and ACC school has the same clear bag policy as SU. After walking inside we went to the Duke store and they proceed to give us a large clear bag for our items.

In case we needed another reason to hate Duke!

That is awful

People in front of us were let in with a clear bag the same size of the SU bag. Guess it depended on what line you were in

Same thing. I was with Mrs. C, some local friends and 44Jack in the midst of TexanMark 's group. Couldn;t find any semblance of a student section at all! Then they showed the three in blue fright wigs dancing on the jumbotron in the second half including the one who reminded me just a bit of that old Chris Farley Chippendales skit on SNL!

That was the kicker I loved. No clear bags but you can enter with a large plastic shopping bag from the Duke University store if you have a receipt.

Note to terrorists: If you want to blow up Wallace Wade Stadium, buy a T-shirt first.

We actually sold 80 tickets in our group. If you layered it wasn't that bad. We had no rain in Durham but it rained some just 10 miles east.

Our tailgate went off well. Only issue was Duke makes parking way too complicated. A bzyantine route in and no lot markings.

Our lot was maybe 60% full when the parking lot Nazi on a golf cart yelled at us for tailgating in a seldom used lane of traffic in the lot. He was going to call the cops on us. So when the campus cops arrived we (75 of us) cleared a lane for them to drive through. They never said a thing.

I have been to 4 Duke games in last 2 years and they always struggle with attendance and student attendance specifically but Saturday was by far the worst I have seen there in last 2 seasons. I think the fact they have a crappy team this season, SU was the opponent and is struggling, and the weather were the perfect storm for less than 10K people there. We had 6 people who work for Duke bail on going because the winter like weather as they described it. Average temps here in the triangle in early November are highs in lower 60's so it was definitely cold for the southerners but Duke football has a huge attendance problem. I know they offer tons of free tickets to employees of the University and Hospital. They also offer season tickets for under $100 (pretty good seats) to employees of the University and Hospital.
