What a beautiful day for football. The four of us decided to walk up from Manley instead of taking the shuttle because of the gorgeous weather.
This one today was one that we will look at at the end of the season and really wish we pulled this one out. The boy's looked great on the first drive yet fizzled near the end. Maryland came back with a couple of great plays and a beautiful throw in the endzone for the TD. Coverage was good, yet the pass was a perfect one.
After a the first few drives the D started to pick up the pressure.
The offense was ice hot then ice cold. You can't argue 600 yards of defense. Hunt missed a few open throws yet hit a few nice ones which where in tight windows. He is progressing as a passer and is starting to read the field much better. We have to remember this is his first year to start the season as the main guy. Nassib had the same troubles and developed as he played. Comparatively, this season is much like Nassib's first year as the starter from the get go. The biggest issue we had on offense today are the multiple drop passes in crucial moments to end very productive drives. Hunt did miss a few reads. The one that Ish got hurt he had Lewis wide open underneath for the first. He missed a few and hit a few beauties. Lewis is quickly turning into a stud.
We could do whatever we want on offense. The best D on the field today was the SU O against the SU O. We got in our own way to many times. The line had its way with Maryland and might have given up one sack when Hunt failed to dump the ball and held it a bit to long. The OL held the pocket well and got a great push in the run game. Maryland had no answer for our run game.
The D begin to step it up after Maryland went up 17 to 10. We got decent pressure and outside the first few drives the secondary did a good job containing Maryland. DL shut down their running game. Outside a couple of bubbles and a couple of big throws they did not do much on offense.
The big story of the day was the missed opportunities or mistakes. One of the big passes in the second quarter, Whigham should have had the pick yet their receiver ripped it out of his hands. They then went on to score on that drive. Kelly should have had a pick in the in zone yet dropped it. Crume dropped a pick. The block punt hurt. I didn't catch what happened but they came through on the right side unblocked. Norton is a mess right now. He was missing everything when he was warming up after the half. Hunt's pick 6 hurt. Then his fumble deep in our end hurt. If you count Whigham, Hunt x2, and Norton that is -21 for them and +3 for us. I can count at least 6 drops for first downs and Broyld was 6.
I hate to put things on the refs but there were many missed holds on Maryland one huge one that would have been a blocked punt deep in their end with the ref right there. The stadium was roaring with hatred. The calls in the late second earlier third where atrocious. What really got the place going is when Hunt went in for the touchdown then it ended up being 3 or 4 penalties straight pushing us back 20+ and goal. It was all very questionable. Add another 7. There was also a horrible late hit call going out of bounds that was purely ridiculous. The flag was extremely late on Eskridge. It was the same call they made on Minnie. I say we boycott any game we have B10 refs.
Erv made some horrible decisions bringing the ball out today giving us horrible field position. There were very few times we were unable to recover from pad field position yet we stalled after about 60 yards. We might have tried a few FG's but we have no place kicking game right now.
I see a lot of people putting this on the coaches but this was purely on the players. GM called a decent t game with much fewer bubbles. I think I counted maybe 3. Receivers were open often and we missed the throw or had a drop.
Bullough made some good adjustments and Maryland was only able to score on our mishaps. I think we are better in the press than zone. With the press we at least give the DL some time to get to the QB. The blitzes were dialed back a bit compared to CMU. We had 3 sacks and outside two huge receptions, they didn't do much passing. There were also a couple of knock downs again this game. WW is starting to hit a stride and think he could progress to be a real beast by the end of the season. He and Crume are doing a great job stuffing the middle. Our front 4 is starting to be a strength of this season.
If you look at all the stats but the score we controlled the game including time of possession. We shot ourselves in the foot.
This team is an enigma. I have no idea what this season is going to hold.

Random thoughts:
- PTG is his own worse enemy. He gets happy feet and dances to much. He is good when he just hits the whole and bad when he waltzes.
- Have we ever had a 1000 yard rushing qb?
- Where has Eskridge gone?
- Great to see AAM work his butt off and show the back we hoped he would be when he joined us.I mentioned he would get a lot of run this year in other posts about spring and summer practice/scrimmage.
- Dixon is an absolute stud and we are very lucky to have him.
- We might have lost the home crowd. Can you blame them with what happened against Vill and Maryland. The crowd showed up and they left them with a very frustrating product. I'm there and one of one of those that do not leave until well after the game is over regardless of the outcome. Fair weather not so much.
- ACC really laid a stinker today against the b10
- Didn't see much of Erv at RB today but AAM and PTG were running wild.
- It was great to see us take more shots down the field compared to the first two games.
- I hope we have a respectable showing against ND. I really dislike those guy's.
- I think all Maryland fans look like turtles but that is my personal opinion.
- We could be the '11 or '12 SU team. Who knows?
- We have 4 games that we could win but will have to scrape them out from what I have seen so far, two that there is a possibility but looks a lot less likely(Duke, UL) and three for sure loses (FSU, ND, Clemson)
- ECU is looking legit. Should we look at them if we go to 16?
- This loss really hurt having so many recruits in this weekend.
- Where did GM2 go?
- We might be the most healthy we have been in a long time going into the 5th week. I do fear the early and late bye is going to hurt us.
