Syracuse Defeats Hampton 65-47 (PS; Axe)

Gentleman, start your patience.

History will show that Syracuse grabbed a 65-47 win over Hampton on Sunday night at the Carrier Dome.

But don't let that 18-point final score deceive you. The Pirates kept pace with Syracuse for much longer than expected and were within five points with as much as eight minutes to go before Syracuse woke up from a Sunday afternoon nap and put Hampton in its place.

Syracuse only out-rebounded a much smaller Pirates team by six (38-32), shot just a little better (41%-37%) and received a little boost from the officiating crew of Dennis Allocco, Jim Bruno, Rod Mrakovich who gave Syracuse 15 more free throw attempts than the visitors.

A wake up call for the Orange? Nah, it's too early in the season for those kind of labels.

One Last Look at the Syracuse-Hampton Game (PS; Staff)

CHRISTMAS HAS TO AVOID FOULS
By Donna Ditota

He has become, at this infant stage of the Syracuse season, the Orange men's most valuable basketball commodity. His ability to escape foul trouble, to balance the necessary defense in the middle of the zone with the temptation to poke at a pass or swat a shot he cannot block, could hugely impact the Orange this season. HU Men Fall to Syracuse 65-47 (dailypress.com; Bailey, yes that Bailey)

For the first 32 minutes, Hampton answered each punch. The Pirates bumped, wrangled and scrapped with the big boys of No. 23 Syracuse, seemingly unfazed by the premier opponent and the 22,848 fans in the Carrier Dome.

Tennessee transfer Quinton Chievous cut backdoor for a slam dunk with 10:23 to play. Junior swingman Dwight Meikle put up a strong layup in traffic one minute later. Then at the 8:20 mark, Meikle drained a jump shot over Syracuse forward Tyler Roberson to pull Hampton within 48-42.

But in those final minutes, the Pirates faltered. With an opportunity to cut the deficit again, Chievous threw a bounce pass into traffic. Hampton shot just 2-of-7 down the stretch as the Orange rattled off 17 points to pull away for a 65-47 victory in the regional round of the 2K Classic.

Christmas Arrives Early in Syracuse (isportsweb.com; Pasono)

As I anticipated, Syracuse men’s basketball took care of business on Sunday, November 16, 2014 as they disposed of Hampton 65-47 at the Carrier Dome.

This game was a bit closer than the first, but there were quite a few bright spots that make me even more excited for Thursday’s matchup with California. Rakeem Christmas had another monster game for the Orange and is showing fantastic improvement on the offensive end. Following his 21 point nine rebound performance against Kennesaw State, Christmas posted a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 16 rebounds, both of which were team highs. It will be interesting to see how he plays against better competition (with all due respect to their first two opponents). It seems that he is handling his bigger role on the team well, and I see him as possibly the most important piece this season.
