Two weeks into campus, we're starting to speculate which freshmen will play this fall and who will take a redshirt.

I invite everyone to take their best guess. Mods - feel free to pin this.

Here's my list.

Play as a true frosh:

Fagan, Devite, Pierre, P. Davis, Elmore, N. Johnson, RTB, Hackett, Jonathan, Harper, Ellis.

Redshirt:

D. Davis, Stritzinger, S. Johnson, Jordan, Morton, Richards, Trotter, Coley, Melifonwu.

I base this on my limited knowledge pulled from the board and straight guesses.

What do you think?

Are you going on the assumption Dungey can't/doesn't play a full season? Otherwise, unless he totally tanks, I don't see the staff burning TD's redshirt for mop up duty. Just MO.

I'm making predictions, not explaining scenarios :)

Plays as true Freshman and is a major contributor:

N. Johnson - Will back up Erv as inside receiver. From everything you hear this kid has the goods.

Pierre - Could see Pierre splitting carries with Strickland by mid-season. Worst case I think he gets a ton of carries.

Kingsley - I think he would have played as it was, but now with the injuries and DQ's, I can see him getting a bunch of meaningful snaps. He looks to physically be ready.

Elmore - Here's your starting FB

Play as true Freshman:
RTB - At first I would have said he redshirts, but from everything you read he has performed well this camp.

S. Johnson - Was here for Spring semester. Possibly the 3 team IR? Will play, but how much?

Morton - May be forced to burn his redshirt due to injuries/DQ's. Someone needs to play at DE so I can't see how Babers can afford to RS a kid with a ready to contribute body. Ultimately, imo he ends up at DT.

Hackett - Somebody has to back up Pierce

Richards - He's a Canadian so he is older. Will play on ST's and step into the rotation next yr

Harper - Bodies needed. He seems to have the size. Could have used a redshirt.

P. Davis - He's the same age as some Jr's and Sr's. He has the size and sounds like he has impressed. He could play a lot of anybody else goes down.

Redshirt:
Devito - No sense burning a valuable year just to back up Dungey and get mop up duty. TD is too important for the re-emergence of this program to throw away a year, and there is no chance Dungey is getting beat out. TD will have 3 whole years to lead this team and they should be humming by then.

Coley - Too deep at his position. If this were a few years ago he could have been forced into action. Now he gets a valuable year to acclimate and get a full year in what looks to be an excellent S&C program

Trotter - Much needed year in the S&C

Davis - Interior OL is pretty deep.

Fagan - If this wasn't our deepest group he plays, but now he can get a full year and a half in our S&C program, which is good, since size will be the only thing holding him back from being a 4 year starter (if he sits this yr). I could see him playing this year just because he was here for Spring semester, but at best he plays on ST's and mops up.

Melifonwu - Secondary is deep. Year in the S&C will be valuable

Stritzenger - See above..

This is a very talent class. imo in a coupe years we will be looking back in awe

Johnson and Johnson , RTB, Elmore, Kingsley, Hackett will play

Morton, Harper, Jordan, Davis and Davis, Coley, Trotter, Melifonwu, Fagan Stritzinger will redshirt IMO

Devito- Im not sure, depends on circumstances.

We have to reshirt as many as possible so we can set the foundation and build

Agree 144% with all of this.

TD only plays if Dungey gets hurt early, otherwise we need to roll with The Officer and Rex as the backups.

IF we can indeed RS the guys you mention, we will be building some quality depth and talent for '18, and beyond.
LGO!!!

I am far from convinced Babers is playing five years out versus what makes sense today/tomorrow.

So, I expect more burns. Devito gets snaps in '17. There is a two-year gap between him and Dungey and he keeps recruiting big time.

This is Year 2 of a complete system overhaul. It makes absolute ZERO sense to burn Devito's redshirt when we have a perfectly capable backup in Mahoney. Let's face it, if Dungey goes down, the season will likely be in peril. Why waste future years of Devito's eligibility when he can continue to learn the playbook, adapt to the college speed and get stronger?

Dungey, Mahoney, Culpepper.

Redshirt Devito. I see no other option IMHO.

Agree on all except for Richards. Though Canadian, he actually doesn't turn 19 until October. With our depth at LB, we should be covered enough on STs to Redshirt all 3 Frosh. Would really like to keep those 3 together, eligibility-wise.

If the coaching staff thinks he is good enough, hard working enough, etc that it would be unlikely he is here for a 5th year, what good is the redshirt?

Everyone keeps talking about burning the redshirt as blasphemy but in the absesnce of a 5th year isn't the redshirt meaningless?

In today's game, would McNabb have been here a 5th year?

*disclaimer, I am almost always in favor of red shirting when possible and think that playing the long game is the surest path to success. I just see this circumstance as a bit different.

This isn't basketball. It shouldn't be assumed he'll leave early. Assuming ED stays healthy, burning the shirt gains us nothing while redshirting him gives us a chance to have him for three years. If ED goes down early and TD is the clear #2, everything changes, but only then.

^^^. Agree with all but would add Davis into getting playing time... agree Devito depends on circumstances but if he is as good as we all hope, he will be leaving early anyway...if he is earned the 2 spot, give it to him... the experience he gains from film breakdown, weekly planning, getting reps and getting used to game speed... will significantly aid in his developing...Go Cuse!

What do you think?

Why not shirt Fagan? We have huge depth at LB, have a stud grad transfer( yes, may be moving to DE), and fagan is below 2 bills. A year of coaching reps, S&C to increase wgt, and a year in the film room and field running with the backers is so valuable. A year practicing the T2 is huge for backers, especially learning pass coverage responsibilities. Thus, why burn his shirt on specials this year. We should be all set there. Cant wait fellas!:)

I agree with this. I don't necessarily disagree with SUskibum, but as long as Dungey stays healthy, Devito won't play. IF Dungey gets hurt, the conversation changes completely.

With a healthy Dungey and a very capable 5th yr senior backup in Mahoney, it makes zero sense for Dino to burn his redshirt for mop-up duty. Devito won't leave early anyways and if he does, he will have been the starter for at least 1 year giving us good visibility with QB recruits. Win-win.

Dino doesn't have the luxury of time to worry about Devito's redshirt if he's truly the best qb on the team at any given moment. I say if they are in the hunt for a bowl and Dungey gets hurt again, go for it. They need momentum not a rebuild for another season. The future is now for the Orangemen.

I think the question is what he does better. Certainly by all accounts he has the best physical tools, maybe better than Dungey. But, after one preseason, does he run the offense better than the other backups? Dungey had spring practice, summer workouts, and preaseason last year and Dino referenced more than once how he was still thinking his way through things instead of playing instinctively.

If ED does get hurt, we're in position for a bowl, and TD really has picked up the offense that quickly, you're right. If any of those three factors aren't there, it doesn't make sense to burn the shirt.

I think we're on the same page. Everything I stated about Devito is prefaced on him being the best man for the job. I am saying we give him keys to the castle b/c he is anointed. I act like Mahoney and his moxie but if Devito is ready to go, let him do his thing.

I tend to like when a qb gets his feet wet before he's ready b/c when he's ready he's had game action. something to be said about that.

As I mentioned above, if Dungey gets hurt, all bets are off for a redshirt. Dino will have a tough decision on his hands if that occurs.

For this year's sake, let's hope Dungey starts all 12 regular season games, the ACC Championship game and both CFP games. ;)
