4th and 2, MD 46, 20 min left, down 18, 7.4 yards per play up to that point.
I really think that might've been the dumbest coaching decision of all time. It blows the 4 pt FG out of the water.
no, 5 min left in the 3rdIt was 10 minutes left, right?
6 minutes left in the 3rd.At that point I stopped believing we were still trying to win.Down 3 scores and at that point in the game it is far from guaranteed you will even get 3 more possessions. It was 10 minutes left, right?
Yup...by punting there he basically said we can only win by Maryland giving us turnovers. His dumbest play call of his coaching time here. The punt on 4th and 2 in the 3rd quarter nearly made me leave early. It was a total fail call by SS. Any coach trying to win the game would have gone for it. Maryland couldn't stop our ground game and we punt on 4th and 2 on the UMD 42.
This is one my of favorite articles on the subject. If you've got a couple hours to spare, you should check it out. lolCan we get some analytics-minded students to come up with a handy chart that tells you based on time/score/distance when to make that call?
This NYT 4th down-bot says the sport is just full of meatheads.4th and 2, MD 46, 20 min left, down 18, 7.4 yards per play up to that point.

total b.s on your part. Not using our time outs with 3 minutes or so to go against Nova was far worse. Why can't coaches get it in their head that you use your time outs on defense? Of course punting in that situation is dumb. But the timeout use is really, really dumb.4th and 2, MD 46, 20 min left, down 18, 7.4 yards per play up to that point.

You don't even need a chart. Can we get some analytics-minded students to come up with a handy chart that tells you based on time/score/distance when to make that call?
You don't even need a chart.
If you're in the opponents territory and have less than 4 yards to go for a first down, get the first down.
You can put some window dressing on that to change depending on time left, how many points you're down, etc. but the statement above works in most cases.
