QBs that manage the play
QBs that make plays
QBs that save plays

Book does all 3 and probably won the game for ND because he can

Rex does #1 most of the time.. He makes a read and goes with that play. When that read is wrong or coverage is there, the play is dead. As he cant get to read 2-3 very well.

Rex has issues with #2, he makes the correct read but often its late and the throw is just enough off the play doesnt work. we design some runs and he fumbles or cant get to the spot.

Rex has no chance with #3. he just doesnt have that part of his game to save a play with legs and/or make a throw that isnt preplanned.

Interesting in that Morgan shows some #3 already but as a FR struggles with the other 2.. time will tell.

All things being equal you swap the QBs yesterday its an even game Book makes all the plays Rex made and probably saves 4-5 more. Rex does not make all those big throws he just isnt that consistent and no way he saves all those plays with his legs..

I think numbers 2 and 3 rely more heavily on natural ability and you either have it or don't. Number 2 can get better as the game slows down with experience. I hope we see less need for 2 and 3 next year but the QB we have playing is able to do a better job with both when necessary. Even the big dogs with all the weapons around their QBs require them to make plays off of the script throughout the game.

yup.. you watch these top teams and they all have QBs that make plays outside of the play call. some QBs take off, some throw on the run. Its lost in all the complaints about play calling, but better teams get25-50% of their offense outside of the real play and we get just a but more than zero..

For all the talent Clem/ND/OSU have plays break down every drive that the QB saves.. We forget that Tommy saved a few before he got hurt, but QBs like Book save plays that we never see saved here since Eric left..

Funny that those who complaing about when the offense went down hill gloss over how much #3 is required...

Also crazy he got hurt so many times doing it and all these other top QBs do it as much or more and few have really gotten hurt.. just bad luck.

look at the Pros. Murray/Allen/Wilson/Jackson/rodgers almost all the top guys have that #3. few like Brady/Peyton did so well without it..

But you need at least 2 of the 3 to succeed in todays game I think.. especially on teams with avg Olines.

go thru the top 25 and see how their QB play is. when you struggle to find a guy who can just manage a game no play calling can over come that on top of bad oline play.

Not that we should always compare ND starting QB’s to our backup QBs but one difference that also struck me was how effortless Book’s throws looked. DeVito has that quality as do many others. Rex looked like he had to put everything he had into every single throw.

yup Rex often throws with such effort and it still floats out all messed up..

on top of that his throws are off by 5 yards at some of the worst times..

Best game he had though yesterday, just the fumbles at key times hurt it

Much like bball shooters, some the ball just comes off smooth and others throw it at the basket.

Dungy did all three and was tough as nails. He‘d run over someone just because.
