We have had great success in the portal but IMO that is more luck and not sustainable long term. I would go with the following strategy... Low level portal QB who is happy being part of a P4 program, making P4 NIL, getting an SU education, and will be serviceable if needed as QB2. Guys like Mahoney or Welch would fit here. Once you have one of these guys you don't need to recruit another until they leave, which will be 1-3 years depending on their eligibility. That way you have a security blanket at QB2. A HS QB who can be serviceable in an emergency as a RS FR. So they RS as a true FR and if the situation arises are good enough to be serviceable as a RS FR. They will likely want PT and transfer out eventually, but they are there if need be as a youngin. A guy like Morgan fits here. You will try to find guys like this yearly. Also there is always a chance a kid like this ends up being a diamond in the rough and becomes your QB1. Hunt would probably fit that. Does Dungey count too here? A portal long shot raw SEC QB. This one is a pure gamble but could pay off. You are not expecting anything from these guys. If they pan out, you have yourself a high level starter. If they don't, it is QB4 so hopefully you never need them. Guys like CDRW and Davis. Once every 4 years find a guy who will RS as a true FR. Get minimal PT as a RS FR. Take over a a starter as a RS Soph for the next 3 years. Like we did with Nassib. What happens when that guy doesn't pan out? Well that is what happened here with DeVito. In which case you have to get a portal starter to replace that kid. From time to time that will happen, you can't always hit on your QB1 HS kids. But the portal starters IMO should only be used to fill in holes not as a strategy to find QB1. So IMO Fran needs to go out and... 1. find a Mahoney for 2026 2. find a CDRW for 2026 3. decide whether Belin/Lott fit as Nassibs or Morgans. 4. if neither are a Nassib find a Nassib for 2027 5. find a Morgan for 2027 That would give us for next year: QB1: Angeli QB2: Mahoney Guy QB3: Belin (if a Nassib then QB2) QB4: CDRW Guy (if strike gold then QB2) Redshirt: Lott And the year after assuming Belin is not a future QB1: QB1: Angeli QB2: Mahoney Guy 1 or new Mahoney QB3: Lott (if Nassib QB2) QB4: CDRW Guy 1 or new CDRW (if strike gold QB2) Redshirt: Morgan Guy, Nassib Guy (if Lott is not)
