Dont know if this was discussed - it's hard to view all threads on my phone with tapatalk not working so I apologize if this was covered.

First, I absolutely think it was a flagrant on fab. He definitely elbowed him in the face and there was contact, even if it was minimal. That being said, did the officials actually call everything correctly?

Fab's elbow came while a guy was shooting a three and the ball was in the air. After the elbow, MU gets an offensive rebound and put back. They then review, call a flagrant and give MU two shots and the ball while counting the initial basket, basically giving them three possessions AFTER the flagrant foul. Is that the way it should have been called?

It may be right, but it doesn't seem fair, given the first basket happened after the foul.

I have been wondering all evening how you can call a flagrant foul on a replay when no foul was called during the play and then play continued.

The refs are allowed to go to a replay if they feel an elbow has been thrown, even if they missed the call.

doesnt matter the refs were once again a joke this game and controlled momentum

I agree with the original poster. Melo's elbow was delivered on the rebound. The Marquette ball player then came down with the ball and went back up to score the bucket. If the whistle blows on Melo's foul there is no shot and the fouled player shoots 1 and 1. Instead they give Marquette made basket, two technicals and possession. If they are going to be able to go to the tape and call the foul they should have to treat the game as though the foul had been called and end play at the point of the foul.

I hate that rule applied to that situation. I like it when guys wildly and viciously swing their elbows, but that was an incidental foul at worst.

I thought they same thing at the time and forgot about it. Good point though - the game should have been considered stopped on Fab's elbow.

except that doesnt help marq. as much as what they decided

I guess the rule reads that they can review the incident any time and assess the foul accordingly, be it no foul, a flagrant 1 foul or a flagrant 2 foul. I can see letting the play go until the review but once they declare a foul, then time should be stopped at that point. If they want to let the time go then give the 2 technical foul shots but give the ball back to whom ever had it when play was stopped.

Sidenote, I also love when a player swings his elbows like a menace. Yea, they will knock someone the %$#$ out, and yea they will get an offensive foul, but the other team will absolutely stop harassing the rebounder after every board.

It is also a cause for ejection. We were lucky they didn't toss Melo.

Fouls language NABC 2011-2012 rules change
The panel also approved a change in nomenclature on fouls that are deemed more severe than a “common” foul in both men’s and women’s basketball. The terms “Flagrant 1” and “Flagrant 2” will now be used. A Flagrant 1 foul takes the place of an intentional foul and the Flagrant 2 foul replaces the previous flagrant foul.
An example of a Flagrant 1 foul would be when a player swings an elbow and makes illegal, non-excessive contact with an opponent above the shoulders. The team whose player was struck would receive two free throws and possession of the ball. Previously, this type of foul was called an intentional foul. The committee wanted to move away from the word “intentional,” because a player’s intent was never the point to the rule.
An example of a Flagrant 2 foul would be when a player swings an elbow excessively and makes contact with an opponent above the shoulders. In this case, the player who threw the elbow would be ejected from the game, and the other team would receive two free throws and the ball.

that was my thought as well. if it's a foul then rewind to the point of contact. nothing afterwards should count.
who's reffing here ? javier cakes and edith too?

The foul was called correctly on Fab. My point was, there were several instances where Fab grabbed a rebound, and was slapped multiple times by Marquette players with no call. They also missed a few obvious over the backs, and we're very inconsistent. One minute they let them play, the next they called ticky tack.

Yeah, that was confusing. I had also wondered, how could they go to the monitor when play was stopped because of an injury. Should any of the plays that happened after the elbow have counted? Not too belittle Jamil, because he did seem woozy, but that could be a good ploy for teams. If you get hit and the referee didn't call anything, go down in a pile and insist they check the monitor. Someone from Marquette must have said that he went down because of a blow to the face.
Anyhoo, I'm sure the rule was applied correctly.
It would be odd to get an apology from the league about a misapplied rule...two Marquette games in a row. I'm sure none of us will forget the phantom over and back call on Scoop in the tourney last year.

Melo has to learn to control his emotions. He is a good and may become a great big man. Great Big Men always get hit. I remember the main reason given (besides the obvious $) for Shaq leaving college was that three or four guys hit him with every touch of the ball. Remember UCONNVICT running 20 fouls at Carmelo? Great palyers who g down low have to learn to play while getting hammered.
