Quint: A Showcase of Energy and Drama
Lacrosse this week was energizing. The TV games were marquee showcases of the sport.Virginia and Notre Dame had goal-scoring runs, drama
4. Syracuse “Head, Heart and Hustle” rallied after falling behind 12-5, tying the game at 13 before ultimately losing at Duke, 15-14, in an ACC Thursday night thriller. Goalie Drake Porter was outstanding making 13 stops, all high quality. At a time when the house was crumbling, he stood tall. Face-offs (8-of-32) and interior crease defense were the biggest issues. A 10-possession disparity stacked the deck for Duke. The referees have a zero-tolerance policy for faulty FOGO alignment. Duke did a fine defensive job guarding the first midfield line and lefty freshman Owen Hiltz. Stephen Rehfuss was the Orange catalyst, and the second midfield line chipped in four points. That’s a great sign. Tucker Dordevic, who was shorted most of the game, came to life in the late stages. Chase Scanlan picked his shot opportunities well, scoring four goals on six shots. After some early defensive struggles, the shorties got more confident in the second half. This is an excellent trio with impressive athletes Peter Dearth, Dami Oladunmoye and Brandon Aviles. The first road trip is never easy, and SU made this a day trip with same-day travel. Syracuse clearly is in the hunt for the NCAA title with this squad.
