[I]Congratulations to ACC champion Syracuse and Patriot League champion Loyola. The unpredictable and crazy year continued in Kennesaw, Ga., with a spring storm, a flooded field, and three-hour delay resulting in the ACC final being finished on an adjacent practice field. 2016 remains unpredictable. Welcome to May Madness and Championship Week. I love this week. Thirty-two teams will battle for eight more automatic qualifiers. In most cases, these games are de facto NCAA Tournament games. Enjoy every moment of it, and then I will see you Sunday night with the NCAA Lacrosse Tournament Selection Show on ESPNU at 9 p.m. 4. Syracuse — The ACC champ showed exceptional readiness after a three-hour weather delay in Kennesaw, Ga., on Sunday, topping Duke 14-8. The Orange defense with the addition of Evan Molloy as goalie has become a formidable unit in the last two weeks. The coaching staff and players deserve credit for fixing the errors that led to a 17-7 home loss to Notre Dame. Sergio Salcido, Tim Barber and Dylan Donahue were the offensive heroes on Sunday. Nick Mellen, Brandon Mullins and poles Scott Firman and Austin Fusco were all on point defending Myles Jones and Deemer Class. In the regular season game, Class stung them for seven goals. In this rematch he had none. Shorties Tom Grimm, Joe Gillis and Paolo Ciferri all held up well against Duke dodgers. The team defense decisions were clean and in sync. Hats off to a group of defenders that I was very critical of just a few weeks back. Ben Williams won seven of the last eight face-offs as the Orange dominated the final 7:10 that was played on Turf Field I after the May squall had left Fifth Third Bank's playing surface under water and not safe for play. In the semis Friday night, the Orange built a 6-1 lead on their way to a 10-7 victory over North Carolina. Jordan Evans, Derek DeJoe, Nate Solomon and Tim Barber contributed in the first half. Sergio Salcido and Nick Mariano were the heroes in the second half. Dylan Donahue managed the clock and score, like an extra coach on the field. What stood out most against the Tar Heels was an improved SU defense. Molloy played well, only gave up one soft goal, and made a handful of gems. Molloy's greatest impact is with his mouth, as a communicator and scheme facilitator. Down-low defenders Mullins and Mellen were excellent on-ball and off and Firman continues to make the gritty plays off the ground. The shorties have been much more solid. Syracuse plays Colgate this week. Syracuse’s resume looks like the No. 5 seed to me right now.
