Few random thoughts …

· SU, Shafer, players, athletics department & alums/fans should not feel like they have to apologize for beating WFU, 13-0. I am just seeing/reading too much about only scoring 13 points. WFU is a pretty decent team with a fantastic coach. Unfortunately, injuries have hit their squad hard. BTW, I bet Virginia Tech wishes they won, 13-0, on Saturday at BC. We won a conference game by 2 touchdowns. Don’t feel bad about that.

· I visit this board nearly every day. Great/passionate fans. One thing that too many here don’t acknowledge is that player performance is rarely stagnant. Players of college age most often get better as time moves on. They mature. They grasp the mental side of the game. So, it is tough for me to believe that Terrel Hunt is a bust. I think the odds tell us that he will be better in ’15 than he was this year. And in ’16, he’ll likely be a tick better than ’15. Of course, injuries can happen and positive development is not universal, but the grass is not already greener on the other side. This is why, outside of injury, I think TH should continue on the rest of the way in 2014. It sets things up nicely for ’15 and beyond.

· Would still love to move Kendall Moore back to tackle. But I am not at practice on a daily basis. Seems like he would be quite a talent there.

· I’d feel a lot better about Maryland game if they were not coming off the bye week, as we were last weekend against WFU.

· For those complaining about the ACC refs and the pass interference, you are obviously right in a vacuum. But be careful. We got a gloriously generous spot on a 3rd and 1 near midfield on our first scoring drive. Would have likely punted (PTG lose a half yard, but we got the first down). And I am not certain that Johnson really intercepted that ball. That tipped ball may have hit the turf (would have admittedly been tough to overturn). But I don’t remember the refs even getting called for replay in the aftermath of the INT.

· I am excited by Johnson’s play. But don’t sleep on Micah Robinson’s contributions either. He’s played pretty darn well.

· I’d love to see SU try to get involved with UConn verbals 6-1 ATH Justin Noye (*** from Rochester) and 6-7 OT Chasz Wright.

· High of 58, partly sunny and no rain in Saturday’s forcast in DC. Take it and run (Jerome!)

I'm not one for correcting people but don't you mean ... "Send it in Jerome!"

I think you mistakenly referenced the incorrect years in regard to Terrel's future seasons. He is a soph and will exhaust his eligibility in the 2015 season.

my original though when seeing the replay of the pic was to hurry up and get to the line before they review it. Looked slightly like it touched the turf at first glance.

I don't really have an opinion here re: Terrel beyond him not being real good now, but if I can play counterpoint to you...I think we see QBs across the country who are the same age with the same (or less) experience being fantastically more productive. Obviously, that's not all on him...but that's the frame of reference. Also, let's remember that we're all a bit jaded at this point waiting for players who really struggle early to turn it around (e.g., Patterson, Williams, Anderson, etc.). Historically, what you see early is what you get. That goes for McNabb and Graves, too, on the other side.

There is a big difference between a questionable spot and blatant PIs: WFU could have challenged the spot if they thought it was wrong, whereas SU could not challenge the non-PI calls.

The play that should have been overruled was our double reverse. That was a forward hand off, hich makws it a forward pass. You can't have two forward passes on one play, unless they change the rule

Can't dispute those examples, but then there is Nassib (who blossomed as a senior) and also Philcox (who did not get chances until his senior year). The development curves for QBs can be different, depending on physical maturity as a sophomore, high school competition and coaching, etc. (Can say the same for some of our basketball players -- as compare Paul Harris with Andy Rautins.)

People tend to cite Hunt's passing statistics, which are affected by YAC, & quality of receivers. But there is also his supplemental role in the running attack (including the threat he poses even when he simply hands off), and against Wake the fact that he didn't put the ball on the ground, throw an interception, or take sacks. If Hunt can hold down on mistakes, contribute in the run game, be a leader, and step up his passing stats as he gets more help from the TE and -- perhaps at some point -- with a true #1 WR, he can win some games for us.

Regarding the referees, I would rather play with excellent refereeing and lose a spot while getting a good PI call. It is not the duty of referees to "even" out the calls, rather it is their duty to call the game right from the beginning. Bad calls can shift momentum that cannot be "evened" out by bad spots later in the game. If the PI call was made, the drive would have been alive while we already had momentum.

Worse yet, GATech did not need the referees to make bad calls and neglect to watch and ignore the obvious penalties making no calls. If we could have mastered their triple option, we could not have won with those referees.

A forward...handoff?

A forward...handoff?

We need Millhouse to recalc Hunt's QB rating #'s. Because I'm guessing all those handoffs to Gulley running east-west, then cutting up field, would be considered passes by the new definition of the forward handoff. Definitely improves Hunt's completion %. And for those plays where PTG breaks them, he'll get a yards/attempt boost.

i know WVU got credit for forward passes on those jet sweeps where they would toss it a foot forward so that any fumble would only be an incompletion.

but if they're actually counting a forward handoff as a pass, they're nuts. i don't think they are though

My assumption is that when Tuttle said "forward handoff", he was referring to that WVU type play where, for a split second, someone isn't actually touching the football. On our reverse pass, it was just a handoff to a guy running left, who then pitched it backwards.
