We always talk about our players but how about our coaches. Who do we feel are our top coaches. Im only talking about coaching no recruiting only coaching. For me it is hands down Shafer. I think that he is the best coach we have on staff and the glue of this team. I dont know this staff well so it is difficult to judge but my sense is that we have better coaching talent on the D side of the ball than on O. I also like that the D coaches have worked together in the past which has to help. The O side of the ball just doesnt seem as cohesive a group as the D as it lacks leadership. Shafer has the creds to be respected. As smart as Hack may prove to be this year he is very young, was handed the OC job without truly earning it and i wonder how guys like JA, Wheat, and Moore feel about his leadership. Thoughts?

good call Bnoro who do you like on the O side of the ball?
Hackett. A lot.

Very well liked among the staff, connects well with the players, and with more playmakers I bet him as an OC looks a lot better this season.

And yet the defense was awful last year. I gather you attribute the poor defense to inexperience?

Watch Marquis Spruills explanation on Orange All Access. Hes rather up front about the fact that there was zero leadership and little "brotherhood" in last years defense as opposed to 2010. Hopefully he's right that this year has more of a 2010 feel.

And to answer the OPs question, I would have to say Shafer is the best coach on the team also. Really, really lucky to have him.

If you've been around the team at all recently, it's not hard to tell that the coaches are having alot of fun and spirited competition with each other and the players. That is great to see as the players seem much more cohesive, and this year's experience at Ft Drum enhanced that. If they get down and out this year, I'm looking forward to watching the leaders of this team step up and keep everyone motivated. Shamarko and Bromley on D, Pugh and Nassib on O.

I really like Hackett.

I really like Daoust.

Don't get the plaudits for Hackett. The next time he calls a great offensive game will be the first.

Shafer...yeah. But, the UCONN game last year sticks in my head. They ran exactly 2 plays with a D3 QB in the second half and Shafer couldn't figure out how to stop them. Two plays for crying out loud....

Wheatley seems really good. Excellent recruter, RBs do pretty well.

Frankly, they all have a lot to prove on the field this year.

None of us has been in a position room. None of us has been on a recruiting trip. None of us has been on the sideline or in the booth. None of us has broken down film with any of the coaches.

All we know is what we think we see on the field.

We have no idea.

Jiminy christmas man the season hasn't even started and you've already played that trump card too many times.

Well thats a given. Clearly this is an opinion thread. I base my opinion on the talent being overseen and relative performance. We had a top 10 defense not 2 years ago. Last year's group was younger and as admitted by Spruill, lacking leadership. Overall, Shafer has done the best job IMO. Will be interesting to see how the young guys from last year (i.e Crume, Reddish, Davis) have developed. Another tell tale sign of a good coach.

I suspect that he does a fine job.

I guess player performance on the field is not necessarily the best measure of how good a coach may be - last year's defensive performance seems to indicate as much about Shaffer.

I don't understand your post.

Sorry.

Yes in experiance, injuries, playing from behind, too much time on the field. Who is your pick PA?

I wouldn't have any idea when it comes to the assistant coaches - I could not possibly rank them.

I have spent time with Marrone - I have talked with him a lot - I have watched him coach - I have witnessed how he runs the program.

I am confident that he is a fine coach who will succeed at SU.

Shaffer seems like a solid guy to me. I like Henderson's pedigree. I like the scheming by the offense - Hackett - with the talent it has had.

Morrison sounds like a fiery and hard working guy.

Adkins seems to have great recruiting contacts and is obviously valued a great deal by Marrone.

Daost - I know nothing about him really.

Strange post at best PA. At the end of the day the position room, sideline, booth, recruiting, are simply stepping stones to what matters which is the product on the field.

Yes, I guess you're right.

Maybe that's why I was surprised that so many picked Shaffer - given the performance on the field last year.

Shaffer likely picked because his unit has seen one amazing year and one pretty good year outside of last year. On the other side, the offense has not dramatically improved, still has GRob guys at the core in year three and somewhat four (Nassib, Lemon core weapons). And specials have been extremely disappointing.

That's my gut on the Shaffer picks.

This is a bit of a tangent, but for those in the know, how likely is Wheatley to leave anytime soon? He's such a great recruiter that I'd hate to lose him. Since his son is early in his high school career I hope that helps us retain him so as not to transplant him, but obviously kids switch schools all the time.

And just think - Wheatley was a plan B coach. How lucky did we get there?
