WEEK 5

FLORIDA STATE beat NORTH CAROLINA STATE 31-13 at home
The Seminoles scored 30+ points for the fourth time in five games and got their first consecutive ACC wins in three years. They dominated, leading 17-6 at the half and 24-6 after three quarters. They were actually out-gained 369-370. Neither team could run the ball much, the Noles getting only 53 yards to 88 for the Wolfpack. But NC State had the only two turnovers. Alex Hornibrook had a big day for the home team, completing 29 of 40 passes for 316 yards and 3TDs with no interceptions. Matthew McKay semes to have played his way out of the starting positon at QB for NC State and was yanked after going 3 for 7 for 20 yards in their first three possessions. “Matt was not doing what I thought Matt was going to do,” (Dave) Doeren said. “It was obvious he was off.” McKay’s biggest problem in the first four games was throwing the ball down the field. Against Florida State, the problem zone expanded. “Love him to death, and he’s a great young man, but it’s one thing when you’re not completing the ball down the field,” Doeren said. “It’s another when you’re not completing it underneath.” (ESPN). Doeren went to Bailey Hockman, who had transferred from FSU and he was 21 for 40 for 208 yards and a score. Then he injured a knee and was replaced by freshman Devin Leary in the late going.

PITTSBURGH barely beat Delaware, 17-14 at home
The Panthers had 6 starters out, including starting quarterback Kenny Pickett. Still, they actually dominated the contest, save for two turnovers in their own territory that set up touchdowns by the Blue Hens. Pitt had to pull it out with a 9 play 90 yard fourth quarter drive. But they out-gained Delaware 443-170. "That was not the Pitt football team I like to see," coach Pat Narduzzi said. "I don't think we came out with the emotion that we could have. I thought we came out flat." (ESPN)

DUKE blew Virginia Tech out of their own place, 45-10.
After gaining only 5 yards in a scoreless first quarter, the Blue Devils got going when a Virginia Tech fumble set up a Quentin Harris touchdown pass. Duke scored on their following two possessions as well to take a 21-3 halftime lead. After a third quarter field goal, they had another run of three scores in three possessions. The Blue Devils out-gained the Hokies 422-259, had 24 first downs to 14 and were +2 in turnovers. Harris was 20 for 27 but for only 163 yards and 2 scores. Harris ran for another 100 yards and a score.

LOUISVILLE was idle.

WAKE FOREST beat BOSTON COLLEGE in Boston, 27-24
“Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson figured the best defense for Boston College's big running backs was to simply stay on the field on offense.” (ESPN) Wake was 17 for 24 on third down conversions. Still, the Eagles out-gained the Deacons, 533-440 and had 25 first downs to 22, despite being only 2 for 12 on third down. It helped that wake was +2 in turnovers. Wake QB Jamie Newman was 21 for 33 for 241 yards for 2TDs and 1 interception. Newman also rushed for 102 yards on 23 carries. For BC, Anthony Brown was 21 for 29 for 265 yards 2 scores but 2 interceptions and AJ Dillon ran for 159 yards on 23 carries but didn’t score. Wake actually punted one more time than BC, (5-4), but led in Time of Possession: 35:51 to 24:09.

My ranking, based on how they played Saturday

1) Duke – The Blue Devils are 3-0, 131-41 since they proved they are not Alabama in the opener. Dominating a Bud Foster defense is an eye-opener.
2) Florida State – The Noles seem to be gathering momentum.
3) Wake Forest- a big win on the road.
4) Boston College- With all those yards, they should have beaten Wake.
5) Pittsburgh almost lost to an FCS team, although Delaware is a pretty good FCS team and the Panthers actually dominated the game except for those two turnovers.
6) North Carolina State looked bad and they now have a quarterback controversy.

Good post (as usual).

That Thursday night game vs. State is big time...

My Ranking:

(1) Wake
(2) Duke
(3) BC
(4) FSU
(5) Pitt
(6) NC State
(7) Louisville

FSU

I think this is spot on. With the exception of NCST each away game is going to be difficult. Im hoping that the kids get healthy and the staff puts together a solid plan for Thursday night. Louisville has talent and their new coaching staff is excellent so i fully expect a tough game with them. Im thinking BC Pitt NCST are wins. Everything else is a coin toss.

Maybe a more important question would be where do you rank SU compared to these teams?
