WEEK 6
There were only two games, both involving two opponents. Everybody else was idle.
LOUISVILLE beat BOSTON COLLEGE 41-39 at home.
It was the Cardinals first ACC win in 686 days, since they beat somebody or other 56-10 at the end of the 2017 season on the same field. This one was much more difficult. The teams traded the first four touchdowns before Louisville put together two in a row to take a 28-14 lead. Boston College came back with two of their own plus a two point conversion to take a 29-28 lead. The home team got a field goal and a touchdown to take a 38-29 lead only to see the Eagles do the same to make it 39-38 before Blanton Creque hit the winner from 41 yards out with 1:02 left. Louisville had the total yardage edge 664-563, 428-304 passing and 235-259 running. First downs were even closer, 26-24. The Cardinals had the edge on third and fourth down, 9/17 vs. 6/18 and BC had the only two turnovers.
The biggest thing that happened in the game was that the Eagles’ fine quarterback, Anthony Brown, hurt his leg in the second quarter and finished the game on crutches. His replacement, Dennis Grosel, threw for 3TDs but was also only 9 for 24 with an interception. Louisville is alternating two quarterbacks, Malik Cunningham and Evan Conley. Both threw for one score with no pics but Cunning ham had 288 yards on 13/18 while Conley had 140 yards on 10 for 16. A. J. Dillon ran for 118 yards on 22 carries but didn’t score. Louisville countered with Javian Hawkins, who had 25/172/1. Hunter Long had 3 catches for 99 yards and a score for the eagles but the Cardinals had three 100 yard receivers: Seth Dawkins 6/170/1; Tutu Atwell6/110/0 and Dez Fitzpatrick 5/108/1. There were 0 sacks in the game. BC coach Steve Addazio said. "We've been a little up and down defensively. We've got to smooth that out." (ESPN)
"It was a good experience," Louisville receiver Seth Dawkins said after finishing with eight catches for 170 yards. "A lot of young guys never got to experience that party in the locker room that we just had."
PITTSBURGH beat DUKE 33-30 in Durham
This game was all about turnovers until the big-play ending. Duke’s quarterback, Quentin Harris was only 18 for 43 in the air and had 5 turnovers, three of them in four plays in the first quarter. Pittsburgh used his mistakes to build up a 26-3 third quarter lead, then turned the ball over three times in a row. The Blue Devils scored four unanswered touchdowns, the last a 44 yarder from Harris to Deon Jackson with 1:29 remaining that gave Duke a 30-26 lead. But Kenny Pickett hit V'Lique Carter from 26 yards out for the win with 38 seconds left.
There weren’t a lot of yards for a 63 point game: Pitt had 337 to Duke’s 288. There were 10 turnovers, 4 by the winners and 6 by the losers. Harris passed for 165 yards and a score and ran for two more but gained only 39 yards on 18 carries. Pickett was 29 for 48 for 268 yards for 3TDs and 2 pics. Nobody rushed for more than 60 yards.
My ranking of the teams as they performed yesterday:
1- Louisville, the winner in the best played game. They are beginning to develop some momentum.
2- Boston College the loser in the best played game. But they need to work on that defense.
3- Pittsburgh, the winner in the worst played game. But they don’t have that power running game they had last year.
4- Duke, the loser of the worst played game. Just how good – or bad- is Quentin Harris?
