So if you are planning to do an away game or two this Fall, which ones?

What factors do you use?

Personally I look at winnibility, ease of getting there, cost of travel and lodging, unique stadium or game, ease of parking, Tailgating scene, and expected weather.

I'll be writing an article for NunesMagician and will use some of your insights.

I'm going to ND game and possibly Pitt this year. Will also be traveling to Cuse for FSU.

I haven't been to NYC since the last Pinstripe bowl so visiting NYC is a factor. Thinking of making an extended weekend out of it to visit friends in the area and catch the bball team with them in town too. I've also never seen Cuse play ND.

Pitt is a reasonable drive for me, kind of a rivalry and I've never been to a game there.

Was seriously considering going to WMU but the flip to a Friday ruled that out. Definitely planning on going to Pitt as long as the weather doesn't look too bad.

I think all the games are attractive in one way or another.

Western Michigan isn't far from Chicago or Detroit, so an expanded roadie is a possibility. Big fan of Chicago. The White Sox are in town for those who like baseball. The Tigers are unfortunately on the road. The Indians are at home too. It is the long way there but you could do a baseball game on the way to WMU, the football game, watch another baseball game on the way home and stop at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame too for good measure.

I probably won't go.

Going to the ND game, because it is NYC, there is the chance for a doubleheader with hoops and I like to see the NYC board folk really hung over.

I would ordinarily go to the BC game but coming the week after the NYC roadie, on Thanksgiving weekend, makes that problematic.

Clemson was a great time a couple of years ago. I encourage anyone who loves college football and is on the fence to check it out. Great scene there. My wife would never go, so it probably is not going to happen.

I really like Pittsburgh. Might go. With the ACC network coming, more conference games will be played early in the season. Would love to see us scheduled to play in Pittsburgh in September, on a weekend where the Pirates are in town. That would be cool. Haven't watched a game in that park and would love to squeeze one in.

Wake is fun too, but it is kind of hard to get there from Syracuse, and the tailgating and game experience is kind of lame. It just isn't big time football. Nice campus. You have the chance to golf no matter when the game is played. Carolina BBQ isn't as good as we have in CNY but those country bumpkins do a decent job. Vinegar though?

Right now I'm planning on going to WMU, Wake and ND

My thoughts on those three

WMU is one of the larger MAC stadiums and actually has a dedicated fan base. I expect to do a boomerang trip. Will leave Thursday late afternoon from CNY with a buddy and stay in the eastern suburbs of Cleveland. I found a decent budget motel for about $50. Then on Friday we'll leave early enough to get into Kalamazoo for lunch, check in (Motel 6 for $60 or so--don't judge as I consider these flops for 8-10 hrs). My best guess is kickoff is at 6pm due to a later game already announced at 9:30pm
Week 1 schedule for 2018

I expect to set up a tailgate for probably 50-60 Cuse fans around 3pm...go to the game, watch the win, then hit the road for a longish 9 hr drive back to camp in NY early Saturday morning. A lot of driving, minimal stops...for a tailgate and game (Yes, I'm crazy). Just trying to get back to have a little bit of Saturday for later football TV games and enjoy the rest of the last weekend of summer.

Kalamazoo and nearby Grand Rapids is actually a very good area to visit...the beer scene is outstanding and some nice touristy things to do.

Wake Forest is next. Early November and I'm hoping the weather is decent (should be avg 66-44). I'm planning on making this a leaf peeping trip and football weekend. I expect to drive from FL and will plan to host about 50-60 Cuse fans. I'm dropping the numbers down as the interest doesn't seem to be there as it was the first trip. As Tomcat said the Football environment is kinda lame and small time but for me as a tailgate planner that is an advantage. We'll be able to park across the street from the stadium for $10-15 in a cash lot and can start tailgating 4-5 hours prior. Ticket pricing is good and seating should be around the 25 yard line. Winston-Salem is pretty boring and kinda sketchy in parts. A tip for those flying in...try flying into CLT or RDU and driving over on gameday. You can get better travel pricing than going through the local airport.

Notre Dame

I wasn't going to this game until the basketball games were announced for the Thursday and Friday before. Weather is the huge variable. Average is about 53-41...but you never know. I'm staying midtown with family, already booked a room for 3 for under $200 a night. I'm planning on flying in and taking the subway to everything. I won't be tailgating but will try to either do something in Manhattan or next to the stadium before the game. Kickoff is at 2:30pm

No reason to talk about the things to do in NYC...too many to list. This will be my splurge trip as tickets alone will be a huge expense for 3 games.

If your putting together a Wake Forest game I'm all in. I live in Charlotte and was planning on going anyway but rather be with a huge contingent of SU fans.

Proximity. I may be in Michigan late August, so if I am, I will extend the stay for WMU. I haven’t missed a yankee stadium game and it’s drivable. I live 30 minutes from BC.

Best of luck with all that snow. My buddy gave me a lot of crap when I left Marlborough for Syracuse in August but he told me he shoveled 25 inches of snow this week.

Away games we look to see what is near us, time of year, and day of the week. The Pitt game might be doable for us since it's only a 3ish hour drive plus we need to get the baby to a football game :)

Used to look at winnability but decided to ditch that criterion last year and go to LSU. Really want to experience as many iconic college football venues as I can. Going to try for one driveable game and one other each year with an emphasis on places I haven’t visited yet.
Plan was drive to Pitt and fly to Notre Dame but with the change in venue I will drive to both. Pencilled in a long overdue trip to Clemson too but a personal commitment will make that wait another couple of years.

Been to Wake. Would love to go to Boston College even though I have been there twice but it is frankly one of the worst overall experiences for football and tailgating and the holiday weekend is tough. And absolutely no desire to spend hard earned frequent flyer miles for a trip to Kalamazoo.

And yet that very nearly worked out! Couple plays man, couple plays.

Waiting for the NFL schedule to come out which dictates my fall, once thats done everything will fall into place. Also have two nieces getting married this fall which locks out those weekends.

Being able to do both basketball and football in NYC in November is def appealing, the wife also likes the shopping aspect of NYC.

Mid April I will know for sure and can let you know!

My dream scenario is the Clemson weekend and my Bengals playing the Panthers that Thursday, Sunday or Monday!

We will attend these four away games:

Sept. 29 at Clemson - one of the best tailgating / college football experiences. Will be interesting after beating them last year.

Oct. 6 at Pitt - have always wanted to go to a Pitt away game. Long-term rival.

Nov. 3 at Wake Forest - great tailgating directly across the street from the stadium. Easy trip for us.

Nov. 17 Notre Dame (Bronx, NY) - will bring my nephews. Gonna whip the Irish this year.

I am big on rivalries and tradition so I like going to Wake, NCS, and Clemson. These are our traditions now.

Game day experience is big. If there is a Fine Mess tailgate I am much more likely to try to attend. Seeing all you crazy Orange nuts is big.

Travel distance is a factor but not a total disqualifier. I hate the hassle of flying in those sardine can seats. Won't usually go to Miami, FSU, BC, WMU, CMU etc. The one exception for me would be LA, where I could visit my daughter.

Competition doesn't mean much to me. Would have missed VT and Clemson if it had. We are good enough to beat anyone on a given day.

Will always go to a NYC game as Mrs Crusty has family there and so have many friends from working there for many decades.

We are livin large like the big boys with only 5 true away games. Its a God sent that ND allowed this game to be moved . I think it will be a true neutral site as ND has plenty of alumni in the tri-city area and travel well anyways. We should also represent well. Is ticket distribution favoring nd like it is still their home game? Any unsight is appreciated .

Pittsburgh is a great city and the weather should be beautiful that day, but I just think Heinz Field is an awful, awful place to watch a college football game. There is something about the yellow seats that just accentuates how empty the stadium is when SU/Pitt play there. I know space is extremely tight in and around Oakland but they desperately need an on-campus 35k seat stadium.

Yes, that appears to be the downside, but Pittsburgh is one of the few major cities I have never visited. Beating the Panthers will be the frosting on the cake!

Gonna try to make Western Michigan. It's only a 2 1/2 hour drive for me and should have some family and friends going as well. My best friend lives in Asheville and we already talked about going to the Clemson game this year. I'll make a long weekend out of it and spend some time bar hopping in Asheville. Never been to one of the board tailgates, so hopefully I'll be able to make one this year.

It's a ND home game. We will only have a small allotment. Tickets won't be easy to come by

Done. Thanks Mark. I have some old scrapbooks of my Grandfather from when he played at Syracuse in the late 30's that I'd love to share with everyone who goes to these tailgates. Looking forward to it.

Keith... I'll be doing a tix buy and tailgate for wake forest. Really easy to park and tailgate there.

I will be interested in WAKE for sure Mark!
