WEEK 3

WESTERN MICHIGAN had an easy time with Georgia State, winning 57-10 and scoring all their points in the first three quarters. The Broncos out-gained the Panthers 694-336 and were +3 in turnovers. John Wassink was 15 for 20 for 246 yards but only 1TD, (no interceptions). But the broncos bucked for 450 yards on the ground. The scary thing? Georgia State, (#137 in the Sagarin rankings), is the team that opened the season winning 38-30 at Tennessee. If you think this board is a bumpy ride now, imagine the melt-down if we follow-up the disasters vs. Maryland and Clemson with a loss to Western Michigan in the Dome? It’s a very real possibility. It might not even be close.

HOLY CROSS will look pretty good to us the next week. They had this week off.

NORTH CAROLINA STATE lost their first game at West Virginia, getting out-scored 6-23 in the second half. They got out-grained 369-445 but were +1 in turnovers. Neither team was good on third or fourth down, the “possession” downs (7 for 22 vs. 3 for 11). Matthew McKay misfired on 25 of 48 passes, although none were interceptions. He had 207 yards and 1TD. The Wolfpack rushed for 144 yards (3.9 per carry). The Mountaineers are Sagarin’s #47 team.

PITTSBURGH gave Penn State all they could handle, losing 10-17 in Happy Valley after two Panther passes from the State 26 were incomplete in the last 9 seconds. They out-gained the Lions 396-389. There were no turnover sin the entire game Pitt was 8 for 19 on possession downs, State 5 for 14. The Panthers, who lost both 1,000 yard rushers form last year, still haven’t found replacements: they rushed for just 24 yards in 25 carries. But Kenny Pickett 35 for 51 for 372 yards. Amazingly, that produced no touchdowns and no interceptions. Penn State is Sagarin’s #11 team.

FLORIDA STATE still can’t get off the canvas but they still gave #25 Virginia a pretty good game in Charlottesville, losing 24-31 when Cam Askers was stuffed from the four yard line on the final play. But the Noles haven’t reduced themselves to looking for “moral victories”. They were outgained 329-415. They were +2 in turnovers and 7/16 on possession downs vs. 6/13. James Blackmon was 22 for 37 for 234 yards, 3TDs and no picks. The Noles ran for only 95 yards at 3.3 a shot. The Cavs are rated #28.

BOSTON COLLEGE was really embarrassed, getting crushed at home by Kansas, of all teams. They had a 17-7 lead and then got rolled 7-41 the rest of the game. The Eagles got out-gained 447-567. The Jayhawks had the only turnover but were 8 for 15 on possession downs vs. 10 for 22 for the Eagles. Anthony Brown was 18 for 36 for 195 yards and a score. A. J. Dillon ran for 151 yards on 27 carries for 1 score. But the Jayhawks ran for 329 yards at 7.3 yards a pop! When have they ever done that? Sagarin has never seen it and ranks them #95.

DUKE bedeviled Scot Shafer’s defense with 41 points, all in the first three quarters in a 41-18 win. The Blue Devils outgained the Blue Raiders 463-339. There were no turnovers, (there weren’t many yesterday in most of the games I’ve looked at for some reason). Duke was 10 for 16 in possession downs vs. 7 for 16 for MTS. Quentin Harris had quite a day. He went 24 for 27 for 237 yards and 4TDs. He also ran for 107 yards on just 11 carries, (9.7!) but didn’t score. MTS is Sagarin’s #122 team.

LOUISVILLE is beginning to right the ship. They beat Western Kentucky 38-21 to go to 2-1. The built a 31-7 halftime lead and coasted. They topped the Hilltoppers with 415 yards to 287, were +1 in turnovers and 5 for 13 in possession downs to 5 for 20. They did it without starting QB Javon pass, (“lower extremity injury”). Malik Cunningham and Evan Conley combined for 10 for 16, 205 yards and 3TDs and the Cardinals rushed for 210 yards and another score. Sagarin has WKU at #112.

WAKE FOREST remained undefeated with a 24-18 win over North Carolina. They built up a 21-3 lead through three quarters and held on to win. They out-gained the Tar Heels 436-333. Both teams had one turnover. Neither was good on possession downs, (5 for 16 to 5 for 19). Jamie Newman was 14 for 26 for 214 yards, 1TD and 1 pick. They ran for 22 yards and 2 scores. The heels had been undefeated and are still ranked #39 by Sagarin.

My ranking in terms of their performances this week:

1) Pittsburgh barely losing at Penn State.
2) Western Michigan is looking formidable.
3) Wake Forest beating the Tar Heels.
4) Duke is a pretty good team.
5) Florida State almost winning on the road at Virginia.
6) Louisville showing some life.
7) North Carolina State got clobbered at West Virginia.
8) Boston College got embarrassed by Kansas in their own place.
