WEEK 11

Duke lost to Notre Dame 7-38 in Durham.

The Irish blew out to an early 21-0 lead and there was never any serious comeback. They pounded out 469 yards to 197, including 288-95 rushing. Duke managed only 10 first downs to 21. The real difference in the game was at quarterback. Ian Book had a career day with 320 total yards to 112 for Quentin Harris. Book was 18 for 32 for 181 yards, 4TDs and 2 interceptions. He ran the ball 12 times for 139 yards but didn’t score. “I’ll have to get faster.” Harris was 16 for 28 for 102 yards, 1 score and 1 pick.

Louisville lost 27-52 at U of Miami

The game was 21-14 when the Canes pulled away with three straight TDs in the second and third quarters. Quarterback Jarren Williams set a record with 6TD passes with no interceptions. He was 15 for 22 for 253 yards. Louisville actually won the total yardage battle 496-449. Micale Cunningham and Eva Conley were 19 for 28 for 328 yards but had only2TDs and 2 interceptions. Tulu Atwell had 8 catches for 142 yards and an 80 yard score. Miami was +3 in turnovers.

ESPN: “Louisville quarterback Micale Cunningham threw for two scores and ran for another, before he left injured in the second half. Hassan Hall had a 58-yard touchdown run for the Cardinals (5-4, 3-3) and running back Javian Hawkins had 105 yards on 15 carries…. It was a costly day injury-wise for the Cardinals, who lost standout left (offensive) tackle Mekhi Becton early with a left ankle injury. Becton returned to the sideline in street clothes, with a walking boot on the injured ankle.”

Wake Forest lost at Virginia Tech 17-36

ESPN: “Bud Foster has been an assistant coach at Virginia Tech for 33 seasons, and before the Hokies' game against No. 22 Wake Forest, the athletic department honored the retiring defensive coordinator for his accomplishments and years of service…. Wake Forest (7-2, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) came in ranked in the top 10 nationally in total offense and passing offense, but Virginia Tech held the Demon Deacons to season lows in both points and total yards (310). It also forced two turnovers and registered three sacks against a Demon Deacon team that had allowed just 10 sacks all season coming into the game.”

Still the game was relatively close until Hokies blew it open in the fourth quarter with two fourth quarter scores. Still, Tech had a 470-301 edge in yardage, out-rushing the Deacons 228-63. Jamie Newman was 16 for 35 for 238 yards, 2TDs and 2 interceptions. Cade Carney had 46 yards rushing in 10 carries. His teammates had just 16 in 19 carries. Kendall Hinton had 162 yards on 8 receptions but didn’t score.

So all three of our remaining opponents got clobbered. It makes me think that if our team had used the week off to clear their minds, if they are angry and disgusted with the way they played and if the adjustments they’ve made, (new DC, more use of Matthew Bergeron and Pat Davis in the line, DeVito keeping the defense honest by running the ball) improve the team, maybe we could get a win against Duke. And maybe that win could give the team the confidence they need to get another win…and another after that…and another after that in a bowl game…..

Once a fan, always a fan. Anyway, here is my ranking of these three team’s performances this weekend:

1) Wake Forest because they were still in it going into the fourth quarter (17-23)
2) Louisville, because they actually out-gained Miami
3) Duke because they were never in it against Notre Dame.
