(This is one of four projects I've bene working on primarily using the information on the wonderful Orangehoops website. I'll post one a day to give each one maximum attention.) This is an update, (in both directions), and a simplification of a post I did a dozen years ago using my “Net Points” system to rank SU’s recruiting classes. At that time I only had information from 1986-87 through 2008-09. Now, Thanks to “Orangehoops”: Syracuse Orange Basketball Season Records I can cover the entire Boeheim Era, although information prior to 1980-81 is incomplete. The first time I did this I used several different stats for my analysis. This time I’m just going to add up the total net points for all the players in a recruiting class in their career here. The reader can figure in other considerations, (such as Carmelo Anthony won a national championship: what if he’d stayed for four years?), any way they please. For the 1976-80 period, I’ll simply use the available numbers. I don’t have minutes, steals, blocks or turnovers in that period, (although, oddly, they have them in a few cases for some players for individual years). I’m using gross numbers so the minutes don’t matter and steals, blocks and turnovers are small-ticket items that tend to approximately cancel each other out so that the total NP for a player’s career will still be relevant if not fully accurate. I’m placing players with the class of the year in which they first played for SU. If they red-shirted or, in Billy Edelin’s case, were suspended for their first year, they become part of the next year’s class: they are among the ‘new guys’ for that year. Similarly, transfers are part of the class for the first year in which they played. The “Net Points” formula: Points + Rebounds +Assists + Steals + Blocks – Missed field goals – Missed free throws – turnovers – fouls = “Net Points” For years where we don’t have every stat or there are still active players who could add to the total, I’ll put an ‘*’ next to the number. The 2021-22 season will be added when it is over. The Ranking: 1986-87 5,177NP 2007-08 4,961NP 1976-77 4,449NP* 2001-02 3,950NP 1988-89 3,538NP 1977-78 3,253NP* 1997-98 3,413NP 2005-06 3,326NP 2003-04 3,246NP 1991-92 3,066NP 2010-11 3,060NP 1996-97 3,012NP 2002-03 3,011NP 1982-83 2,991NP 1983-84 2,882NP 2016-17 2,777NP 1992-93 2,766NP 2009-10 2,717NP 2017-18 2,659NP* 2013-14 2,554NP 1980-81 2,529NP 1979-80 2,501NP* 1984-85 2,481NP 1989-90 2,478NP 1994-95 2,336NP 1985-86 2,198NP 1999-00 2,109NP 1998-99 2,064NP 2015-16 2,024NP 2012-13 1,906NP 2011-12 1,890NP 2018-19 1,759NP* 1990-91 1,554NP 2008-09 1,514NP 2006-07 1,437NP 1993-94 1,232NP 2019-20 1,171NP* 1981-82 948NP 1995-96 918NP 1978-79 641NP* 2020-21 631NP* 2004-05 384NP 2000-01 353NP 2014-15 347NP 1987-88 None The breakdown: 1976-77 Roosevelt Bouie 1,978 + Louis Orr 1,764 + Hal Cohen 515 + Bill Drew 158 + Cliff Warwell 34 = 4,449NP* 1977-78 Danny Schayes 1,093 + Eddie Moss 1,020 + Marty Headd 825 + Chris Jerebko 235 + Mark Cubit 80 = 3,253NP* 1978-79 Ron Payton 489 + Rick Harmon 144 + Ed Gooding 8 = 641NP* 1979-80 Eric Santifer 1,587 + Tony Bruin 877 + Mike Sheehey 37 = 2,501NP* 1980-81 Leo Rautins 1,102 + Sean Kerins 711 + Gene Waldron 664 + Larry O’Neill 52 = 2,529NP 1981-82 Andre Hawkins 728 + Sonny Spera 121 + Chris Lewis 102 + Peter Wynne -3 = 948NP 1982-83 Rafael Addison 1,706 + Wendell Alexis 1,263 + John Karpis 22 = 2,991NP 1983-84 Pearl Washington 1,339 + Greg Monroe 881 + Howie Triche 610 + George Papadakos 52 = 2,882NP 1984-85 Rony Seikaly 1,764 + Derek Brower 249 + Michael Brown 242 + Herman Harried 226 = 2,481NP 1985-86 Sherman Douglas 2,077 + Rodney Walker 121 = 2,198NP 1986-87 Derrick Coleman 2,903 + Stevie Thompson 1,608 + Matt Roe 548 + Keith Hughes 64 + Erik Rogers 54 = 5,177NP 1987-88 Earl Duncan 191NP (JB actually recruited no one this year: Duncan was part of the 1986-87 class but couldn’t play as a freshman due to Prop 48. You add his total to 86-87 and get 5,368.) 1988-89 Billy Owens 2,012 + Dave Johnson 1,118 + Dave Siock 177 + Richard Manning 123 + Tony Scott 108 = 3,538NP 1989-90 Conrad McRae 892 + LeRon Ellis 612 + Michael Edwards 495 + Mike Hopkins 479 = 2,478NP 1990-91 Adrian Autry 1,214 + Scott McCorkle 340 = 1,554NP 1991-92 Lawrence Moten 1,858 + Luke Jackson 623 + JB Reafsnyder 426 + Glenn Sekunda 139 + Anthony Harris 20 = 3,066NP 1992-93 John Wallace 2,188 + Lazarus Sims 578 = 2,766NP (Otis Hill redshirted this year thus effectively joined the next year’s class. Jim Hayes came as a walk -on and got a scholarship as a sophomore: I’m counting him as a walk-on because he wasn’t recruited to come here.
