The first time I did this I used several different stats for my analysis. This time I’m just going to add up the total net points for all the players in a recruiting class in their career here. The reader can figure in other considerations, (such as Carmelo Anthony won a national championship: what if he’d stayed for four years?), any way they please. For the 1976-80 period, I’ll simply use the available numbers. I don’t have minutes, steals, blocks or turnovers in that period, (although, oddly, they have them in a few cases for some players for individual years). I’m using gross numbers so the minutes don’t matter and steals, blocks and turnovers are small-ticket items that tend to approximately cancel each other out so that the total NP for a player’s career will still be relevant if not fully accurate. I’m placing players with the class of the year in which they first played for SU. If they red-shirted or, in Billy Edelin’s case, were suspended for their first year, they become part of the next year’s class: they are among the ‘new guys’ for that year. Similarly, transfers are part of the class for the first year in which they played. The “Net Points” formula: Points + Rebounds +Assists + Steals + Blocks – Missed field goals – Missed free throws – turnovers – fouls = “Net Points” For years where we don’t have every stat or there are still active players who could add to the total, I’ll put an ‘*’ next to the number. The 2021-22 season will be added when it is over.
