Sometimes the backup brings a skill set that can be deployed a little bit differently and you don't necessarily want to use that all the time, but it has value when used selectively. Sometimes a depth chart acknowledges effort and growth of a player moreso than indicates likelihood of playing time. The announcer marveled that Steve Linton was 3rd on the depth chart (we know that's not the full story, but go with it), yet seeing snaps and making plays.
