I'm feeling a little Orange sober or somber right now. I'm just not feeling that warm Orange feeling. Last year I was pretty Orange drunk on the roster. I thought all the pieces were there for the team to be much better than the previous season. Many of us had high hopes of having a NC level team. You just can't under estimate the importance of senior leadership. Having G and Cooney really made their final team much better with things that did not show up on the stat sheets. btw, Cooney's foot was in and that was dumb call.

So here we are in 2017. Hopkins is gone. JB retirement up in the air. And as much as people don't want to admit it our recruiting has taken a hit. The 2017-18 lineup is shaky at best (before you get angry put your post where you mouth is and a make bold prediction if you think the 2017-18 lineup is destine for greatness).

The NCAA scholarship restrictions has hurt our team by not having 3 and 4 year players in a position to step up last year or this year.

So here are my thoughts. I love JB. I think he's a terrific HOF coach. At some point he's going to have to retire. I think what the AD should do is go out and find a really good D1 coach who is clearly on his way to become a HOF coach and pay him an insane amount of money with huge success-determined incentives.

Again, I have nothing but the greatest respect for JB. I just think maybe trying to get a superstar coach might be the best thing for the program. We can need to compete with Villanova for Philly recruits. And so we can compete with other top schools in the ACC who are raking in the 5-star recruits.

Please do not roast me for my comments. I'm really not trolling. I'm just not in the best mood right now about Orange BB. I'm just not looking forward to this season or the next few seasons. Whatever the reasons, I'm just frustrated. Please forgive me. However, I would like to hear other people's thoughts on the coaching situation.

About the same, but we did salvage the recruiting season with some decent prospects. 2-4-7 has us with a top 20 class. The jury's out whether we can sign impact guys for 2018 though.

I'm not expecting anything but another mid-tier ACC finish though. It's a good thing we play BC and Pitt twice.

Disagree. With the right guard addition we may surprise. Don't disagree with the type of coach we will need in future. Boeheim is back and I'm gonna back him.

I fixed it. I forget these skowting services don't want us talking about them on here...

I just checked. Our class is currently ranked 37th behind Indiana, TCU, Butler, Arkansas, Illinois...

Looking in the wrong area. These are the 2-4-7 only rankings. It's going to look worse because Foreigners(Brissett and Marek) aren't ranked. They are both 4* prospects. As is Sidibe.

So you're saying we recruited 3-4 stars. Hmmm interesting and hardly grim

The recruiting problem has been beaten to death and it is what it is at this point due to many different reasons.

Syracuse is not going to spend a fortune on a new coach now or in the future.

We have JB for another few years who is better than the vast majority of coaches in the NCAA.

For me it's exciting to think about how this season will turn out. However that will be, I'll still be rooting for the Orange.

I pretty much agree with everything that you stated. In terms of "Syracuse surprising us" I read that as "We see this roster as an NIT team or MAYBE a bubble team. But if they surprise us, we'll make the tournament and win one game."

I love Cuse hoops as much as the next person. But I don't see anything on the roster besides Tyus Battle and maybe TT that says they finish at the top half of the conference and win more than a game in the NCAA Tournament if they make it. As of right now, my expectations are being around 7th-9th in the conference and being on the bubble. Anything in the NCAA Tournament after the first round is gravy for me.

You know why that is Dave? Because the sites you looked at, don't rate foreign players. So, our two best recruits, don't figure in to that evaluation. Both Marek and Oshee will be very good players for us. Both with skills up the wazoo. If we take Thorpe, and I think that is the question now, I think we have a very competitive team in a very competitive league. Thorpe and Battle would be a strong back court. Very strong. Two big guards at the top of the zone. Two big guards that can make a 3 and a free throw. TT at the center. We know he can score. Hopefully, and I have no way of knowing nor do you, how much he has improved on defense. And three young forwards. I love the skill of two of them and it's impossible not to just love Moyer. I don't know how many games we will win. Maybe a little. Maybe a lot. Or anywhere in between. but I really believe that we will be real fun to watch. and this time next year, we will feel really good about where we are. And the team we have back.

They don't call you dasher for nothing right on!

Boeheim is not going to leave on his own accord, so the administration just punted the ball down the field when Hop left. At some point he's going to have to stop coaching. At least we had a plan before, now it's just stick your head in the sand and hope for the best.

As opposed to the plan that every other school with an aging coach has in place? :noidea:

Half the coaches in the ACC are old enough to collect Social Security.
Why is it only JB that deals w/ this nonsense?

K will probably leave earlier than JB, due to his back problems.
Leonard Hamilton, Ol Crying Roy, Pitino, Larranaga - none of these guys is buying green bananas anymore. :p

Battle is fantastic, Thompson has big time potential...how many freshman big guys have we had that were that polished offensively? And I'm legit excited about the Marek, Brissett, Moyer freshman forward trio.

If only we had a friggin point guard. The whole outlook would be different.

I feel a little lost. I appreciate everyone's comments especially dasher's comments. My hope is JB lives forever. The problem with pending retirement is it might hurt our recruiting efforts. Just too many unknowns. Although realorange took a crap over my idea of paying for a really good coach I still think the sooner the better. Maybe the school can take out loan for the money. The Orange brand needs to be supported before it loses its value too greatly. I still hold the hope the school will find a confident and viable replacement for JB as soon as possible. And I concur with the somber predictions. It takes years to get really good at the 2-3 zone. The next group of kids making up the Orange team have to be committed to playing defense. Team chemistry is really important. There's no way this team can win without superior teammanship against players with superior skills.

This will pass. I guarantee you come November I will know each player's grandmother's maiden name. I will be ready for the first game with dasher leading the way! In the meantime:

Check out this 15 pound carp I caught last weekend. I threw it back. I wanted him to get bigger! He was Orange! Go ORANGE!

Nice catch.

I'm a garbage fisherman, I catch that I'm framing the damn thing. Haha.

That may be appear to be unpromising, however, the harsh reality is it's who we are and have become. 3 straight years our ACC record has proved it, along with still pitching a no-no when it comes to ACC tournament wins. The documented recruiting struggles and misses (both whom got here and left and those who never donned an SU uni) are significant and the proximate cause of our mediocrity. We can debate the reasons ad nauseam as has been the case, however, whichever argument one chooses to weigh most, the only question of fact that can't be disputed is our middle of pack ACC position.

According to early projections for next season (an 8th place ACC finish) it's just status quo of our identity in the ACC. Sombering for sure, but unfortunately, until our record on the court starts saying otherwise, it's the current reality.

Gave you a "like" because you fish and because you released it, Dave. Nice fish!

maybe it's just coincidental, but Hopkins leaving & Boeheim signing on for a few more years seems to have injected some energy into the program. After going months without picking up a new recruit, on the weekend that Hopkins left, we signed Howard Washington. In the 2 months since then we've added Hughes & Dolemaj. That's more success in the 10 weeks since Mike's departure than in the 10 months prior. I'm not trying to place blame or to point fingers, but in retrospect it sure looks like there was something stagnant or stale in the program that seems to have been lifted. I'm optimistic going forward.
