Red can’t coach, but what makes a good/great coach.

I'm not saying Red is the guy for us and I can't with certainty proclaim he is going to survive the season, but we need to at least give the staff credit for their preparation for Houston. Team was absolutely locked-in, playing hard and the prep was excellent. The Kansas game was incredibly frustrating because we simply could not hit a shot all game. Missed tons of open shots. I don't think that loss is on the coaches.

Second half was an absolute disaster against Iowa St but we played another pretty damn good first half. It's hard to look at 0-3 in Vegas and feel good but I do believe this is Red's best team and we are on the cusp, we are quite close to being a legitimately good team
I do think that's true.

The Iowa State loss, and the way we loss, makes it feel like all progress is gone.

But maybe it's not.

A lot is going to hinge on how we respond. People were prepared for blow out city against Houston, especially without Freeman, and we played well enough to win that game and shot just poorly enough to lose it. We showed we can prepare for Houston, why can't we be prepared for Tenn?

We lost 3 games and 3 great chances for resume building wins, but we can still have the season we hoped for. There's just no margin for error now.

Yes this Tennessee game is quite important. But if we put the second half vs Iowa St out of mind, the team was exceptionally competitive against a trio of quality opponents, and the biggest frustration was a lack of shotmaking. Missing wide open 3s all week. If Betsey, Anthony and Kingz aren't collectively ice-cold vs Kansas that is a win. Houston loss was obviously right there for us

Because confidence has evaporated that the Boeheim way of building a program wins today in college basketball.
Fine, but we don't think either has their own take on basketball? Just curious why they are written off & grandpa's like Rick Pitino are on the list.

I too hope someone steeped in another system would be considered, but don't think they should be written off.

You’re curious why people would prefer Rick pitino as a coach over hop or Gerry?

Respectfully, NO Autry will never be a good coach.
Remember the end of his first year when players would "bump" into him coming off the court. He didn't have their respect.
You listen to his post game press conferences and it has become obvious he is clueless on how to get the most out of his players/team.
Tell me how it's acceptable for a team to be the worst free throw shooting team out of some 330+ programs. That should have been addressed the first day of practice- not cured but definitely improved.
You look at the facilities CUSE has...the Melo center and the dome,,,and then look at the "product".
He's not taking advantage of these facilities. Quality players and 20 thousand fans are not showing up.
And the coaching staff...? Autry picked them. Griff is a disaster.

Can Autry's team substantially improve over the next 20 games? I want to see it. But the 2nd half of the Monmouth game was the "canary in the coal mine".
Yea it’s whack a mole with this team. After Monmouth they came out guns blazing against Houston. Up 9 on Houston is no joking matter. Tennessee never got more than a 6 point lead on Houston.

I think the team yesterday gave up and I put that solely on the coaches first and then some of the players.

"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results“ that was us for 3 games. Our players saw this and gave up.

We saw the Kansas and Iowa St coaches make minor adjustments ant halftime and kill us. Guarantee Autry didn’t do anything except keeping up Level 5 intensity. That may win a game here or there against other coaches or at the dome but not against bigger stronger players and smarter coaches.

If they somehow beat Tennessee the whole vibe will change. Red has disappointed immensely but I'll take the season as a whole once it's over.

Winning is a byproduct of great coaching. Input vs output. What are the inputs required to be a great coach?
Winning is a byproduct of fielding a team of winners & I assume can be aided by great coaching. Was JB a materially different coach in his down years vs his up years? I think not. He just assembled more winners in those up years.

I honestly don't know what makes a great coach. I feel like one would need to see their practices to know. I think Izzo is one, based on consistency & usually peaking in March. Hurley, Few.

I assume they teach the fundamentals, have innovative & effective systems, recruit winners & foster a culture of winning, are inspiring, demanding, adaptable, knowledgeable.

I write this as I watch MSU fight back to steal the momentum from NC, with Izzo practically willing them back into the game.

Pitino is really old for a coach and has highly questionable morals. I wouldn't want him taking over Syracuse at this stage of his career, sorry for that 'wild' opinion.

GMac & Hop seem like good family men.

That said, I am not advocating for them per se, just asking why they are being crossed off the list. And do think they are both probably better than Red. GMac should have gotten the job, IMO JB should have retired earlier & given it to Hop.

Shaka Smart is interesting, but what has he achieved since VCU?

I would like getting someone coming off that kind of moment though. Someone younger, and up and coming.

The continual line about getting after it and intensity is a easy excuse for not really having an idea how to make adjustments.

I'm tired of him always saying effort was why they lost. It's not. It's because they severely lack any semblance of an offense. Too much iso, excessive dribbling, bad spacing, horrible shot selection, etc.

Losing because of inept coaching. It's because that's why!

Let’s just say I’d cross off gmac and Hopkins before I would Rick Pitino.

Brent Axe amazingly said something that was pretty on point, in that when you hear the opposing coaches talk it's often about specific Xs and Os adjustments and observations, whereas Autry is always talking in vague platitudes about effort, "grind" and intangibles.

This is a good perspective.

He’s the underpants gnomes of basketball coaches.

1. EFFORT

2. ??????

3. PROFIT

(Someone has to get that reference)

I’ve been saying this for three seasons. It drives me nuts.
