DM has taken on responsiblity for special teams - game lost because of his unit and no one else's.

Why we don't have a dedicated special teams coach is confusing.

We are at our limit in terms of number of coaches allowed under the rules. Someone has to go in order to make room for a ST coach. We need to rearrange assignments and give ST a greater priority.

Most decent DIA college teams have a special teams coach, so if Doug can't even arrange his coaching staff correctly that is a bad sign

Completely agree. This isn't the NFL--special teams is a huge differentiator between teams who focus on excelling and those who don't.
At our current level, we need EVERY advantage we can muster. A few extra punt return yards, a few less yards yielded on coverage--whatever, those are plays we need.

The coaches seem to have shorn up the kicking aspect of ST. Kickoffs in particular. But our coverage [both punts and KO's] has to improve--it has to. Would love to see us hire a ST guru [CASULLO!!!!!!!!!!] and make it a concerted team focus moving forward.

Kick off coverage (for all teams) is greatly helped by the rule change (kicking from 35), and for us, by having a stronger leg in Norton. Across the board, kick off return yardage should be down this year.

Punt coverage -- in the formation we use (3 guys as deep blockers), the personnel plays to a team with a great return man. The snapper, kicker, 3 deep blockers leaves 6 guys to get down and cover. The snapper can help get down the field but won't be a prime tackler. Have to look hard at who those 6 cover guys are and whether Doug can upgrade.

There isn't a school in the Big East that has a dedicated ST's coach. Everyone has a position coach that does double duty.

Even Michigan and Alabama use their TE's coach for ST's.

Maybe that's why the Big East sucks

I don't know what the answer is on ST... I agree with many here about the positives yesterday (particularly on the offense).

However, without some serious improvement in ST play, we will lose more games due to substandard ST play.

That was the one big disappointment yesterday.

The play last year was embarrassing and we appear to have picked up where we left off... especially on punt coverage.

Marrone needs to sort this out - and fast.

It continues to be a major laibility.
