We now have mid to low end B10 playing high stakes in the NIL game along with the entire SEC and even a handful or more of ACC teams. There were a handful of top programs with a $20M + roster. There had to be at least 20-25 with $8M or more and some schools you wouldn’t expect. Unless some sort of oversight committee comes along and enforces a salary cap, which is basically impossible, the salaries for the rosters will only increase as the media contract $ widens each season. Right now there is the same 20-30 programs who eat up all the top transfers, recruits, and have a realistic shot at making the playoffs.

How Syracuse is managing their roster is how they have to, not how they would want to. People can’t say that some of the potential transfers we brought in at positions of need wouldn’t have been a welcome addition. We just can’t compete in the NIL game so we do it by roster retention. That’s good and all but if we’re being honest with ourselves that’s not a recipe for sustained success. Right now it’s not a fair playing field when certain programs have the ability to pay for a plug and play transfer at a critical position and the other has to try and do it with player development.
