This doesn't make logical sense to me. It doesn't matter if you have the ball twice in a row, to end the first half and to start the second. Your reasoning doesn't make sense. Yes if you took the ball in the first half and also got the last drive in the first half you have one an extra possession that half. But that doesn't always happen. The same thing happens in the second half. What matters is the total possessions. One team gets the ball to start one half and the other gets to start the other half. Theoretically that should be the same number of possessions per team. The question is, in what half do you want it to be more likely you get an extra possession? Or do you want to score first, causing the other team to play catch up and possibly pass more. Or do you want to see how things play out, get the ball first in the second half to answer what happened in the first half? Or maybe you want to be able to make some adjustments after half time and maximize possessions in the second half. Or maybe you feel really good about the game plan going in, and want to maximize possessions in the first half before the other teams adjusts. I think it depends a little on what you are feeling for that particular game. I like changing it based on the specific game situation.
