I have no idea who the best quarterback is, and I’ll leave that to the coaches that see them every day in practice. It’s their jobs to make that assessment and their careers succeed or fail based upon that.

What I do know is that sports is competitive. Everybody on the team should be fighting for their position. For a coach to keep a player in any position out of “loyalty” is unfair and basically playing favorites. If somebody deserves to play over somebody else then that’s what they should be doing. That’s what players are competing for.

I understand that with a quarterback, it’s a little different, and that they can evolve over the course of the year. Still, it would seem inappropriate to frame it as being loyal to a single player over other players who are, themselves, loyal to that coach.
