RIP Carmen Basilio

The four biggest things to have happened in CNY sports history:

1955 Nats win NBA
1957 Carmen Basilio defeats Sugar Ray Robinson
1959 SU wins NCAA football championship
2003 SU wins NCAA basketball championship

RIP, Carmen.

RIP and thank you Carmen for making Syracue famous back in the 50's and giving us something to hang our hats on.

You were the most amazingly courageous fighter I have ever seen. You won the world championship on sheer guts, heart and determination against all odds.

A true warrior and champion who will be getting many more tributes in the coming days and weeks ahead, all justly earned.

What a warrior this guy was.

Carmen had a great run, until recently would see him every now and then at one of the old-school Italian joints I frequent. The guy beat friggin' Sugar Ray Robinson, for heaven's sake. That looks pretty damn good on your resume.

Here's a (surprisingly) good write-up on the Rochester rag's site: http://tinyurl.com/b4cbzh4
