You'll notice it wasn't a 'helmet to helmet' hit. He hit Gifford in the shoulder and knocked him off his feet. It was the frozen turf that knocked Frank out.
A few years back, Danny Parkins on his radio show announced that "Dick Butkus made his living on helmet ot helmet hits". I checked out three different Dick Butkus highlight clips on You-tube. They had no repeat plays so I assume they were from different seasons. They lasted more than 16 minutes all told. i never saw a single helmet-to helmet hit. Dick was a classic tackler who led with with his shoulder, (that's why the pads are there).
