RIP Hayden Fry

Was just going to post the same. A huge figure in college football. RIP.

Thanks for calling it out.

He was a superb coach. Iowa is what they are today because of him; they were floundering before he got there. He put the "ANF" (America Needs Farmers) circle on their helmets.

My late FIL was from Iowa and his family there are all Hawkeye worshippers. The man was a god there even 20 years after he retired and for people like myself was the first thing that came to mind when thinking of the state. Iowa was not Iowa until he arrived and he changed them into something the entire state now has a love affair with. One of the all-time greats to never win a title.

He also created the "TigerHawk" logo they use now which was also a game changer. Then two of his assistants did the exact same thing with Barry Alvarez with the "Flying W" at Wisconsin, and Bill Snyder with the "Powercat" at Kansas State. Those coaches also turned two relatively doormat schools into powerhouses.

BTW Hoo's That, we had a good time at the Cavaliers game this year that I asked for your help with. Your parking suggestion was spot on and ODU made it a good game for the first half instead of a blowout from opening kickoff. Coincidentally my high school quarterback Ricky Rahne is now ODU's coach.

He was also the inspiration for Hayden Fox, Craig T. Nelson's character on "Coach".

Wouldn't it honor him more to leave it on?

It could be seen that way for sure, but Fry twice had the decals removed from the team’s helmets to honor the dead — in 1991 at Ohio State, following the Gang Lu shooting rampage that killed six on the UI campus; and in the 1996 Alamo Bowl, when the mother of player Mark Mitchell was killed in a car accident on her way to the game.

It's a little silly and definitely a sharp contract from Whose House Our House, but Hayden had a tradition of doing the hokey pokey with the team in the locker room after wins and they brought it back last night.
