When I think of the best coaches of my lifetime not to make a Final Four, he and Gene Keady immediately come to mind.

We only played against him twice. A home win in 1989 and the 2002 NIT. I'll never forget the press conference where he threatened to kill John Calipari. I'm hoping they were able to laugh about that years later.

Cheney is one more of a dying breed of coaches. His whole heart and soul was in a game. You sometimes wondered if his eyes were going to pop our of his head when he really got wound up.

I'm afraid the next to go, and was as invested in the game as much as John, will be Louie Carnesecca.

Both part of that era when the Big East was at it's heights and the Big Five games at the Palestra in Philly were small wars.

I’m not saying this in a disrespectful way but Lou Carnesecca is someone who I can never seem to remember if they’re still alive.

What a coach. Always had a ton of respect for his teams. Wish we would have had more matchups with them in the 80s-90s.

Growing up we used to joke and call those his “owl eyes”.

Chaney's zone, when he had that thing goin' with the right players, was probably superior to JB's. Just suffocating.
He wasn't playing against Big East teams. No disrespect to him but it just wasn't the same.

It seems like an large amount of coaches and sports celebrities have died in the past few months. It’s sad and it shows we’re all getting older.
We are going to keep getting older unless we are the ones people are talking about.

The A10 in the early/mid 90s was certainly on par w the big East. There was no peak UMass in the big East. Umass was a force and I remember them just dismantling us in the Hawaii tournament in 96. Had we played them in the final four we would
Have lost by double digits

RIP to Chaney. The OG team that no one wanted to play in the tournament

The tail end of his career is a good study for our current situation.

That “peak” was one season though. They were really good for 5 years or so before that, but no different than the really good Big East teams.

UConn? They were extremely good in that 3-4 year stretch with Donyell Marshall to Ray Allen.

... and Donyell Marshall only ended up at UConn because we got put on probation.

Sigh. Butterfly Effect.
