Safe to say, the signature win of his career was besting SU in the E8 in March of 1989.

Lou went to two Final Fours. He also took his alma mater New Mexico State Aggies to the Final Four in 1970.

Lou was a really good coach. But Cuse’s 1989 Elite Eight loss to the Illini still stings 31 years later. The second most bitter loss in our history, imo—only behind the 1987 title game. That 1989 team was arguably the most talented SU team ever (1988 is also up there), and we were in control of the game until late in the second half. Some missed free throws killed us again, and I believe Sherm or DC fought through an injury that day. Ugh.
