I remember when he was drafted. I was probably in middle school. All the sports media were saying "how can you waste a first round pick on a punter?? You can get one of them anywhere!"
Ray Guy was so great; he averaged something like 5 yards per kick on average better than the 2nd best guy in his rookie year (over 47 yards a kick, IIRC), and the Raiders won a handful of games because of how he always gave them advantageous field position. A example of why some people thought Al Davis was a genius as an owner.
