RIP Stephen Sondheim

My favorite composer of all-time. An SU connection: My senior year in Newhouse, we went on a post-Thanksgiving field trip to NYC to visit the NYTimes, UPI, and the NY Daily News. (The Daily News, with the newsroom ringed with photo darkrooms, was by far my fave.) One of the few shows open on that holiday weekend was 'Company', a Sondheim musical, which was playing at the Alvin Theatre.

I went, it was about a half-full house as the show was nearing the end of its run, and I was totally transfixed. Bought the Original Cast Recording. My love affair with All Things Sondheim had begun.

Elaine Stritch had left the show by the time I saw it. But 'Ladies Who Lunch' has stood the test of time. Check out all the early '70's topical references in the song:

Elaine Stritch was one of Sondheim's favorite performers. He generally gravitated to actresses who can sing rather than singers who can (sorta) act. Here's Stritch performing one of the great Broadway 'survivor' songs all time from Sondheim's 'Follies':
