RIP Tina Turner

I don't wanna lose you
I don't even wanna say goodbye, oh, no
I just wanna hold on to this
True love, true love

I still remember the first time I heard of them, I was working at GE in Syracuse in the maintenance department (floor sweeper). I could wander around that production floor at will. Not tied to a production line.

This young black girl was working on one of the overwalks, kind of a bridge where the workstations weren't doing production line work. This enabled me to visit with her a few times a week.

She was very knowledgeable when it came to the music that was happening in the black community. I learned a lot from her. I asked her who or what was her favorite performer. She quickly said Ikeatinaturner, I nodded and pretended I knew who she was talking about... I had no idea. She said it fast and that was how I heard it.

This was 1966. The British Invasion and a number of US rock groups were dominant on local AM radio. It took me a while, a year or two, to figure out who she was talking about.

It turned out she was spot on. Tina was a gem...as was Gloria the lady who knew her music.
