I did an earlier post aobut "Points Outside the Paint". I was interested in whether there was a pattern to how we shot in the Dome and at home vs. in smaller arenas or and on the road, so I updated it a bit:

We keep hearing about points in the paint. I decided to compute points outside the paint, (POP), as a measure of how we were shooting jump shots. Not all jump shots are three pointers. The formula is simple: Total Points - Points in the Paint, (available from the SU athletics box scores), minus free throws. Let’s take a look:

Fordham 78-40-11 = 27 (home)
Manhattan 92-48-15 = 29 (home)
Albany 98-60-12 = 26 (home)
Colgate 92-28-20 = 44 (home)
Virginia Tech 69-36-6 = 27 (neutral)
Stanford 69-34-8 = 27 (neutral)
E. Michigan 84-30-7 = 47 (home)
Florida 72-32-17 = 23 (home)
Marshall 62-36-15 = 11 (home)
G Washington 85-52-17 = 16 (home)
NC State 88-36-7 = 45 (road)
Bucknell 80-32-16 = 32 (home)
Tulane 80-24-18 = 38 (home)
Seton Hall 75-46-11 = 18 (home)
DePaul 87-58-16 = 13 (road)
Providence 87-43-11 = 33 (road)
Marquette 73-28-17 = 28 (home)
Villanova 79-38-18 = 23 (road)
Providence 78-38-13 = 27 (home)
Pittsburgh 71-28-20 = 23 (home)
Notre Dame 58-18-13 = 27 (road)
Cincinnati 60-36-5 = 19 (road)
West Virginia 63-32-13 = 18 (home)
St. John’s 95-52-10 = 33 (road)
Georgetown 64-24-12 = 28 (home)
Connecticut 85-28-11 = 46 (home)
Louisville 52-38-9 = 5 (road)
Rutgers 74-36-21 = 17 (road)
South Florida 56-28-15 = 13 (home)

We have 763 points outside the paint in 29 games, an average of 26.3 per game. We’ve scored 2206 points, or 34.6%, have come outside the paint. We’ve had 494 POP in 18 home games, (27.4), 269 in 11 games away from the Dome, (24.5). If you count only “true” road games, it’s 215 in 9 (23.9). We’ve had good POP games at home (Colgate, Eastern Michigan, Connecticut) but also on the road, (NC State). We’ve had some lousy games on the road, (DePaul, Cincinnati, Louisville, Rutgers) but also at home, (Marshall, George Washington, Seton Hall, west Virginia and South Florida. So there’s no apparent pattern to home vs. road or Dome vs. normal sized basketball arena, etc.

We really need to shoot it well from the outside against UConn tonight to be able to win. Drummond and AO shot blocking make it tough to get enough points in the paint to win. We did it at the Dome. Now we need to do it again. Hoping Brandon and JS turn it around tonight.
