Was going to make a few posts during the game but with a droid and touchscreen, I couldn't read or see a thing on my phone. If I had tried everything would have looked like a Cali post.

Nice day, great stadium for this type of thing. Wasn't as vanilla as I thought it would be as they did show a few things. Sat with GOSU, Lincolncuse, Lemoynecuse and my son. I know others were there but didn't see them and wanted to meet money but didn't see his post until post game.

In general, it is hard in this type of situation who looked better, offense or defense. Rarely did the 1's go against the 1's. 1 O looked good usually vs 2 D but the 1 D destroyed the 2 O. Some mixing and matching too. Far too many guys missing to get a real handle on things as there were too many walk-ons in the 2 deep that won't stay there (I hope).

Offense

QB - Nassib, Loeb, Kinder and Broyld all played. Hunt is missing a golden opportunity. Didn't seem like Nassib played a lot and he didn't throw a lot but completed what he did. Loeb played the most it appeared and Kinder got a lot of run. Neither Loeb nor Kinder looked good really with the exception of a few plays. If Hunt gets back, he has a real shot at #2. Broyld ran 2 plays from QB and one was a high snap and the other was a zone read run that went no place. This will be Nassib's offense but like I said, they showed less with him it seemed. He completed short passes underneath but the 1 deep one he threw, he missed by 7-8 yards deep. Maybe protecting from injury. Kinder and Loeb each had a couple INT's also.

RB - Smith, Smith, Smith. Definitely MOP by far. Has lost some weight it seems, is a step quicker but still has the strength. Will definitely be #1. Nobody kept stats but he had to be close to 100 yards. Had 1 TD run and always got positive yardage. A very pleasant surprise. PTG got better as the game went on. Had a couple of fumbles early but broke a couple good runs of 20 yards or so later. Will probably be a change of pace type. AAM wasn't there as he is hurt I guess. Clay Cleveland was the #1 FB but Myles Davis played some too. Rooting for that kid. Broyld got a carry late and went for about 7 yards. As soon as he got the ball and went off left tackle, I looked at GO and we both said the same thing. Damien Rhodes. He probably doesn't have the same speed, but his style is that tall, upright, long stride gliding style. I think Broyld could see the field this year. More as a wildcat type thing than as a QB or RB.I think we will be OK at RB with Smith, PTG, AAM and Morris with Broyld a wild card.

WR - A lot of guys missing due to injury. Lemon, West, Forster, Rene. Sales caught everything near him. The guy that I was encouraged by was Hale. Had 3 catches and is that tall gliding WR with good hands we need. Fleming dropped the first pass thrown him but had a couple later on. Kobena nice play where he got open on I think was a crossing pattern, made a nice catch and then got some YAC. With a 100% Lemon and West, I think this group is going to be very good. Lots of depth and options.

TE - Worried some here. We are really going to miss Provo. Wales got banged up early as he took a big hit and didn't come back. The others were kind of nondescript. Max caught one ball. Stevens didn't do much that I saw. We could really use some help here. I might be wrong here, but it "seemed" Marrone was coaching the TE's.

OL - I don't know...maybe Ugh? Definitely have too many guys out here. We had 2 walk-ons with the 2nd O. The first OL was Pugh, Chibane, Macky, Foy and Alexander. Pugh, Chibane and Macky were fine. I think Chibane is going to be better than people thought last year. When we ran left, we seemed to get positive yardage a lot. When we went right, not so much unless the 2nd or 3rd D was in. Foy and Alexander have good size but a ways to go. I wonder if when Trudo and Hickey are back, that they are the right side of the line. The 2nd OL, was not good at all. We really need some depth here. We need to be able to go 3 deep across the board with scholie players. Hopefully when guys get back, this unit looks better.

Defense

Tough to say a lot about defense individually because in these type of scrimmages, you tend to watch the offensive player more. We do have some numbers here. Lots of DB/S types. Had a some INTs, some hard hits and in general there was a lot of whooping it up when a good play was made. Like the height of Eskridge as a center fielder. Needs to add some weight though as he is very thin. Spruill wasn't there so Diatabe was the #1 MLB and calling signals. The 2 new DE's, Goggins and Welsh got a lot of work. Neither played very bad there. Hard to tell against some of the OL we had out there. Really liked how they all ran to the ball. Davis, Diatabe and Vaughn were the 1st LB's. No one player stood out but Shamarko is definitely built the best. Guy has some guns. Again, maybe others will have more to say about the D. We played 4-3 once again and used a lot of Okie. As to the coaches, Shafer stayed on the sideline for the most part barking out instructions and observing while the assts and GA's were on the field or on the sideline with individual groups. But Henderson spent most of his time standing in the end zone kind of taking it all in and watching everything. Seems to be a special asst for the defense besides working with the DB's. Reddish is going to be very very good. Still wish he was at WR...great great hands. I think Reddish and Anderson were the starting DB's.

Specials

Didn't do a lot of specials. No kickoffs or returns. No punt returns and not really any FG's. They did XP's which Krautman kicked his about 40 yards and Licky looked bad on one although it snuck in. They both had the ball moved back 5-10 yards a couple times that were made. Fisher tried 3-4 punts and they were all 35-40 yards, nothing special. Walk-on Dixon did 2 and his first one went 53 yards with little hang time while his 2nd one went about 40 but was end over end and bounced most of the way. Really need some consistency here. Seemed Anselmo was coaching specials more than Marrone.

One thing of interest was the punt protection. Went with the 3 man protection in front of the punter. The 2 outside guys were Chibane and another OL, but the guy in the middle was Loeb. With a receiver on the outside flank of the punt protection, you can see we want the other team to at least think about a direct snap to Loeb and a pass. Whether we do it or not who knows, but the threat will be there. Maybe it slows down the rush a little?

Will post more as I think of things or respond to others posts who were there.

Thanks, bees.

Very interesting info on Smith.

Thanks. Good Friday is messing me up, and I almost put up a post yesterday asking if anyone went to the scrimmage. Yes, I am an idiot.

Thanks Bees!

Really pleased to hear about Jerome Smith.

Hopefully he will be a real productive player this fall.

Well, here's my take on today's scrimmage:
This is Ryan Nassib's team. He is more than head and shoulders above the rest of the would-be QB's. He snaps his throws - the others heave them. Loeb looks like a back-up ought to. Kinder can't throw and loves to run parellel to the line of scrimmage. Broyld didn't play much.

The second team center (Phillips) can't snap in the shotgun. He mucked up several plays all by himself. Macky is our guy, even if he's 6' 0" at best. Foy seemed to be working with Coach Adkins a lot, so maybe he has the desire to get better. Alexander is carrying somebody's baby.

Sales looks very good. Hale looked like fluid and caught some balls (one long one from Loeb that was a foot out of bounds). Kobena messed up some plays from a mental standpoint.

Jerome Smith looked "useful," but I wouldn't anoint him a star yet. He's just a hair less than fast or explosive. PTG was himself - quick, explosive and mistake-prone. You take the good with the bad with him. Myles Davis wasn't called on to do anything noteworthy. He's just a freshman in his first spring practice, so I have no expectations of him yet.

The defense seemed closer to game ready than the offense. Goggins looked comfortable at DE. Simmons looks like he needs another 15-20 pounds on him. The young DB's looked good - though Eskridge, Anderson and Desir are built like greyhounds. Shamarko: he's no greyhound. He's a fireplug. I'll bet the advice he got about going pro was that he needs to show something special to be a prospect at his size.

The kicking was about as expected. Krautman has a strong leg. Lichtenstein has a lesser leg. Fisher had great hang time, but only 40 yards downfield. The backup punter launched one, but shanked another.

The defensive highlight was when PTG broke around the right end and got stuffed downfield by a LB and a couple of DB's, who told him "you can't do that!" All in all, a spirited practice that showed about what we expected, even without seeing the team until today.

Good take although IMO, Smith showed a lot today. Also, I always expect the defense to be ahead of the offense in the spring plus they had close to a full complement of players. The O was missing a lot.

I heard shamarko has brick hands. Was told he needs to demonstrate better ball skills to be considered a high draft pick.

Wales did come back in. I saw the hit. His knee got bent back. I thought Bromley played well inside. Welch didnt look to bad at DE along with goggins. if you can combine welch's body and simmons athleticism that would make one hellava DE. I hope Pierce Brewster can be a difference maker. Dont forget we have Micah too. I like what I see from the DB positions. I see athleticism and depth. With K lyn being backed up by reddish. Morgan, wingham and ford coming in. Should be a special group. I like what Im seeing from mungwa and desir. Eskridge is a athlete that can play anywhere. at the clinic last weel. DB coach donnie henderson was awesome. He's going to bring discipline and accountability to the unit. The players seem to respond well to him. He knows his stuff. I am already contacting him about DB drills. Nervous about diabete. He's too small. You can run at him. Lets hope spruill stays healthy. The others played solid. Vigille was out of position a couple times. offensively, the ones that played well Smith, Sales, Nassib, Gulley, Pugh, Chibane, Hale in that order

Thanks for the reports from everyone today! From watching highlights on SUA did I actually see the QB's allowed to get hit? If that was indeed the case I can not believe how dumb that seems to me!

Thanks Bees and OrangeAl. Appreciate the info.

Starting to worry about the o-line a little. Really hope Hunt will be a solid QB. Wish he played and we could of heard about some visual proof that someone has a fair shot at being able to replace Nassib. That is very concerning. We better bring in two for the 2013 class with one being a very good prospect.

The highlights on SUA show different.

Not sure but I think I remember QB's getting hit when they ran the ball but not sure they took real hits on passing downs and they were getting sacked.

I mean I know it's football but but if Nassib goes down were pretty screwed. The one highlight on SUA showed Nassib dropping back, the play broke down so he ran and dove-slid and he still get popped. I have seen most programs where if the play breaks down they just blew the whistle and ended the play. I just hope this does not continue. I do not mean to be a downer but this was really shocking to see IMO.

Loeb went down in one of the highlights, the whole pocket collapsed around him.

how small does Simmons look? Is he like Sharpe was a frosh?.. We need a real speed rusher. JPB may be it but I am not counting on anything.
