Sure, people go with the 3 and 4 guard lineup all the time, but at SU, for many years we have loaded up our team with agile, lanky forwards, and have deployed them at the top of the zone for better defense.  Think about the 2003 team for a minute - we spent a lot of time playing a 3 forward offense - Melo, Hak and Duany, or Melo-Hak-Pace (who was much more of a  than a guard for most teams).
 
So long as we had one or two of those SFs who were adequate from 3, they were be the preferred guy on the floor. It's partly how JB compensates for rebounding deficiencies in the zone, by having another forward sized guy at the guard spot (and even sometimes at the center spot).
