Rooting like hell for Shafer to get one more shot eventually

He'll get another shot in the G5, eventually. Do well there and another P5 opportunity could be his.

Yeah he'll get another shot, I'm sure. Even if he lands in a DC role for a few years, he's been a successful coordinator and he's a good citizen/program guy. It will come. Just hope he's learned from this round and uses it as a means for improvement for his next shot.

He will. He's probably looking at a DC job next year, which always keeps his name on the radar.

I did feel bad for him in that you could always tell (especially in his final postgame presser today) that he really loved the city of Syracuse. That is the hardest part of this profession that they chose.

I wish him and his staff the best of luck. Maybe a couple of them stay on. I hope the new guy at least interviews a few of them to see if there's a continuity fit on his staff.

Even the guys who hated his ability as a coach recognize just how good a guy Shafer is, and how hard he works and what a great series of relationships he builds with his guys.

He's a guy that we all so desperately wanted it to work out for. Would one more year have made any real difference for him? We will never know, but most people would say it probably was just prolonging the inevitable.

3 pieces of advice for Shafer as he gets ready for his next job.

1. Work on the game management issues
2. Pick an offensive identity and hire somebody who can execute it. We basically had 6 offensive systems in 3 years under Shafer (McDonald, McDonald's system as called by Lester, McDonald's revamped system, Lester running McDonalds revamped system after he was demoted, Lesters system and the triple option as necessisitated by Mahoney in the line ups). Gotta have an identity, play through it and recruit to it. It doesn't matter what that identity is, you just gotta find one.
3. There is a balance between coaches who can create an amazing family atmosphere in the program and guys who can actually coach. We have some guys on this staff who can't coach in their current roles.

Those are three big things you can control going forwards that got you fired from Syracuse. Best of luck Shafer, your energy and excitement will be missed in Syracuse.

HCSS is the worst guy to fire. A guy you like, a guy other colleagues like, a guy the clients like, but ultimately a guy that simply wasnt producing. Its easy to fire a or a douche. But to fire a guy that is generally well regarded by everyone, thats tough.

Its very tough, it would have been a lot easier had he been a jerk, but at the end of the day you have to do whats best for the program.

I would add

4. Play offense like you play defense. As a DC he was never afraid to blitz.
5. Be careful when hiring your friend. Sometimes it can help getting someone from outside your circle.
